It’s super annoying that I have to wait a couple seconds every time I tap a word on the iOS app, or that there’s a janky delay after typing the answer and having it tell you that you’re correct. Perhaps your iOS developer is giving you reasons why it has to be that way. Don’t believe him, he’s lying!
@briansspamacct, I’ve noticed that there is a small delay after answering a question before the next question is presented to the user. It seems to me that this is part of the app design rather than unintended sluggishness as you’ve implied. Actually, I notice this on PC as well. The delay on my end is on the magnitude of one whole second, but not multiple seconds. Unfortunately, I don’t have any developer tools installed on my mobile device that allow me to debug the iOS application, but perhaps a Memrise employee can shed some light on this issue.
Perhaps there is a reason for this design. Perhaps some improvements need to be made. My advice is to first seek the advice of a Memrise employee and then refine your suggestion(s)/complaint(s) accordingly instead of conveying your concerns in the form of accusations. Additionally, a specific example would be helpful. What language(s) or lesson(s) have you experienced these difficulties with? Which version of iPhone and iOS are you using? This information will help you get a satisfactory response sooner.
Happy Learning!
I have an iPhone 6s and the response times are decent, less than a second.
I suspect it’s related to getting the audio playing, especially when on Bluetooth headphones, but have no way to verify. Duo doesn’t have the same issue (I think they must preload the audio and/or keep the audio engaged even when there’s no sound. shrug)
So maybe a tiny bit of lag from Memrise plus a tiny bit of lag from the headphones? Could add up to something more noticeable.
Well in that case, why don’t you do a couple lessons without the headphones and see if it appears to be faster?
Network latencies also differ from place to place.
I figured it out. I was right: it’s due to MR reengaging audio after getting the answer correct.
If you allow background audio in the settings, and play some music while using the app, audio is already engaged upon getting the right answer, and the lag disappears!
I’ve got some pretty soft instrumental music on my phone, but i guess I should probably find a silent track, or white noise or something.
Regardless, it’d be nice if MR would fix and not disengage audio (I’m unfamiliar with iOS development, but in the worst case, you could just play a silent audio track in lieu of an explicit engage API.)
And I noticed that sometimes self-recorded audio has a trailing pauze in it (because the user didn’t press quickly enough ‘stop’ after recording the phrase), but because the learner hears only silince of course, it feels like the app/web is slow.
