I create many of my own vocabulary lists would like to be able to add memes on the same page where I can create new vocabulary lists in my own course.
At the moment, if I want to add a meme, I have to either wait to the learn the word in the “Learn New Words” feature or I have to go into the preview mode of a vocabulary list. Since I create my own lists, I might have to wait quite a while before I can add a meme in the “Learn New Words” feature or, if I decide to use the preview mode for a vocabulary list, I would have to click “Next” many times before I finally reach the word that I am looking for.
I certainly wouldn’t mind an easier way to add mems either.
One thing you can do with the current system to make it faster though is ignore all items in the level except the one(s) you want to add a mem for, then use ‘preview’. This will only show items that aren’t currently ignored. You can then un-ignore everything again after you’re done.
For some reason, I cannot add columns to the courses I have made. I have looked on the memrise support page on how to add new columns, but when I look in my courses, the features on the memrise support page do not appear in my courses. Is there a limit to how many columns can be in a course? At the moment, I am only using the columns that standard in every course.
I think you should have opened a new topic for this, but since it is your topic anyway…
I don;t know which support page you looked at, but wonder what the steps are that you are taking when trying to add a column.
But where the red ‘rectangle’ is, there was always an ‘add column’ option - why is it not there anymore? I am 100% it was there, because that is how I added columns in the past. (and this drop down list has only 1 item, which doesn’t make sense - the ‘Advanced’ button could simply be changed into a ‘Bulk add words’ button.)
Back to the original topic, I would really prefer just to be able to add my own mems at the same time I add new vocabulary words to one of my own courses. I add a lot of new grammar and sentence structure that I have learned into my courses and I like to leave additional notes for myself so I have problems figuring why a sentence is built the way it is, I will have already written some hints and explanations for myself.
I would think that notes and explanation are the best put into a column labled ‘Notes’ (or whatever label you like). In the properties of the Column you can set that it is shown when tested or only when viewing the words in its level.
The purpose of Mems is to faciltiate the memorization process by creating associations, ‘tricks’, to have a mnemonic for words/phrases that you forget every time. E.g. french: bateau = boat, but if you forget it all the time, a mem like ‘The boat is BatEAUtiful’ might be a trick to remember it. Whenever you have that word wrong, memrise will show you the mnemonic. So, not so much for explanations.
Do you think a column to put your explanation in would solve your problem, rather than using mems?
And where you able to create a column now?
