[Feature request] Change instruction language in the app

In the Memrise App it would be great to have a feature that allows me to look for courses that are made in other languages as well. My app is in German, so when I search for new courses in the app it only shows me courses for German speakers. I have to go to the browser every time, to look for courses made for English speakers for example. It would be nice to either see all available courses in hthe app, just like in the browser. Or to have the option to “add” inatruction languages, in other words languages I would be ready to learn in.

Thank you very much!

Hi Moritz and welcome to the forum,

You can do this on both versions of the app but (sadly) only for Memrise’s ‘official’ courses.

On the iOS app:

  • scroll down your current list of courses and tap on the yellow “+ Learn another course” bar.
  • tap the language you want to select a course from eg “Turkish”.
  • tap “Browse more courses”.
  • At the top of the screen you will see “Courses for German speakers” (or whichever language you have your device currently set to).
  • tap on “German” and then select a new language from the rolling list at the bottom of the page.
  • tap “Done”

It’s a similar feature on the Android app.

Good luck!

PS - There are a couple of other forum topics running elsewhere on this forum about the current lack of a way to search for community created courses on the app.

Thank you for the quick reply! My goal of switching the language would not be to see all the courses that the app shows me in a different language, but to see more official Memrise courses!

For example there is no Icelandic course in German so it does not show up in the “+Learn another course” bar when I have my app in German. It does however exist in English so I can find it on the browser.

It would be great if there would be an option to unlink the courses that show up under the “+ Learn another course” bar from my default app language. In a way that I can see all official Memrise courses and not just the ones in the language that my app is set to.

I now know how to change the language of the courses I can already see in the German version of my app but I still do not see all official Memrise courses that are in other languages.

Yes, that limitation is frustrating. The available list of ‘official’ courses for English speakers is longer so offers more options. For example, I can access Portuguese 1 for Italian speakers using the method mentioned above. I don’t see Portuguese as an option available to those who have German as their default setting.

This is the only list of the available ‘official’ courses that I know of. You could use it to keep a note of which courses you want to learn and then, when ready, plot a route to navigate to them on the app by changing the default language setting (maybe via ‘English’).

@lurkmoophy - is there a better (less ‘clunky’) way of achieving this?

We implemented something like this when you sign up on web (being able to choose the ‘source’ language from a menu). I know it’s something that we’re wanting to easily switch between on the mobile apps, it’s just about when we next touch that screen.

I’ll feed back into the rest of the design team though. I 100% agree with you.

Hi @MoritzDittmann73, I don’t know if this helps, (and apologies it has been largely answered above), but I think the Web is the easiest place to select courses.

So assuming you are German and want to learn courses for Italian speakers, on the home page change the language to Italian, and you’ll see all the courses they have on offer (including user-created courses).

To see the full choice of Icelandic courses just change the language to Icelandic.

Once started the course should appear in your home page on the Web and App (I think).

But as has been mentioned, English seems to give you the biggest choice of pairs of languages.
