I am currently in China, and since GooglePlaystore is blocked here, it is very difficult to get an update for my installed Memrise.
I also would like to suggest Memrise to my students, but they would have equal difficulties getting the app. (No one here is using the computer version, everything happens on mobiles.)
I would like to see an alternative Android download link (maybe on the page itself, since this isn’t blocked). Would this be possible?
Hi A.C.
I am in the same situation.
But to solve it and keep all my android apps up to date I use a vpn.
I use pandapow. You can find it here: https://pandapow.co/pricing/
They also have a router that has vpn on it. That is what I use, it is super easy and convenient, but it is sold out at the moment. I guess it will be back after the spring festival.
If you decide to get a vpn from them please send me an email at [email protected] . Then I can tell them I referred you and we will both get a free month added.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Danny
Actually don’t need a VPN. Things still aren’t so easy, since Google is checking you IP and comparing it with the IP you logged in from usually (and expecting your account being hacked).
But, besides making it easier for myself, it would also a good opportunity for Memrise, since this allows them to open up for the Chinese market (and most Chinese don’t have a VPN and have no contact outside who can download it for them). Maybe they will reconsider.
there are plenty of Chinese people learning English and other languages with memrise
If you give I speak Chinese (simplified), look at their numbers:https://www.memrise.com/courses/chinese-simplified/
Hi,
you can directly download APK files and install them from archive sites like Uptodown:
Have you ever heard about the slogan: NEVER touch a running system?
Examples:
I am using an older Android apk version.
My version even includes the max streak badget (e.g 95 days) which has been removed on the web portal a few months ago with introduction of Ziggy.
Older Android apk versions even show you the old Memrise ranks, instead of Ziggy.
If you read all forum threads you will find out, that newer versions don’t get really better but new bugs are introduced all the time, which have to be fixed in the next weeks / months.
If you ask me, app updates do not make a real sense, if you want to use a stable system which actually works - and this also applies to the DuoLingo Android app, were newer versions have problems with “Android clubs” and typing/writing hungs, were older versions didn’t have these bugs.
You would have to be aware of the complete app history / detail CHANGELOG.
If you run into a serious bug with your current app version: Well, this is another story (I can understand that you want to get it fixed, if you know what version you need to update to)…
Always make a BACKUP before you install new app updates!
I don’t know where you heard that but that is not the case at all.
Like I said, I am a foreigner in China and I am using the play store with no problem through a vpn.
Same goes for my google accounts, facebook etc.
The only thing that might be difficult is using the free version of Spotify because they don’t allow you to stay logged in for over 2 weeks in a different country than you signed up at. But even that is no problem as I just pick the server in the country where I am from (the Netherlands).
But back on topic. There are already versions of memrise in Chinese app stores.
What you are asking for is only interesting for a sub-set of a sub-set of people. Foreigners in China who don’t understand the language well enough to use a Chinese app store and are not using a vpn.
That is a minuscule group.
