Extremely slow and expensive operation on Firefox

Hi

This has been happening for months now. Memrise operates extremely slowly: even after a correct answer is submitted, it can take up to 3 seconds for the next question to appear. During this time the browser appears to be doing nothing (frozen): but I can see from system stats that Firefox is thrashing the hard disk (e.g. 35Mb/s). This even sometimes happens when a question is being displayed (it’s up to 2 seconds before I can even click in the answer box), or even halfway through answering (browser becomes unresponsive to the keyboard for 2 seconds).

Audio courses are completely unusable, as it can be up to 4-5 seconds before the audio is downloaded and starts playing.

Other websites don’t have this problem, and the actual content displayed on any Memrise question page is minimal, so I can’t help thinking that something has been very badly coded.

System info:
Windows XP SP3
Firefox 49
Core Duo 2MHz processors
4Gb memory.

This makes Memrise incredibly frustrating to use, so that I’m looking around for alternatives.

Just curious - why not use a different browser? I find that there are MANY websites that run better with a different browser.

I’m using Google Chrome/ Windows 7 and get excellent performance on Memrise with a standard cable internet connection. I have noticed that Mozilla Firefox is a bit of a memory hog generally, which is the main reason I don’t use it much.

The other issue you may have is that Windows XP is quite old, and this may be slowing things down.

Also, I believe that Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft with updates, so that could be causing some issues.

Anyway, good luck!
