Everything is locked past level 1

I’ve just recently download the app and I wanted to learn German, I am on level one and have pass it but the “next up button, learning new words” is locked and is blocked by a paywall. Not sure if this is bug or if everything is blocked by paywall. I love the app so far and want to continue using it as it has a great base for learning but I can seem to get pass these barrier of the app and I seek help within the community and helpful responses thank you.

Nope, that’s not a bug if it is a Memrise made course. They want you to pay to continue to use their course(s). The alternative is user made courses. They are all free.

How do I start the community lead courses I only see their version

just go on courses and search for what you are looking for

As @GabrieleCramer-Knebe says, you can simply go for usermade courses. Some are as good as the Memrise official courses, some not so much; it’s a little hit and miss but you can just have a poke around until you find one good for you.

For basics, there’s things like the German for Polyglot course, which I’ve heard is okay. Looking it over, it seems better than a basic wordlist format (such as either of these top five thousand words frequency courses here and here) but isn’t super complex either… Though I’m unsure if it has audio. Also noticed this Beginner German course looks alright for just starting out (again, I’m unsure if it has audio).

There are also exam-practice based courses for several different testing standards. One here for AQA GSCE and another for the Edexcel GCSE (though probably useless unless you’re in England, but I’m sure there are usermade equivalents for American exams too).

If you’re using Duolingo alongside, the usermade course covering their course’s specific vocabulary is quite useful (Comprehensive German Duolingo Vocabulary).

For grammar, once you have a certain vocabulary under your belt, there are things like this German grammar course and this one on verb conjugation.

If you have a niche vocabulary interest at all (for example, I like birds and this course had me covered), there is usually a course to help you. Even found this on German idioms.

Point is, there are tons out there. So many it’s hard to choose, actually. Just find whichever works best for and is most relevant for you. Plus, even if you’re having problems in the app, you can get the official Memrise courses on desktop for free (which seems a bit unfair, given your problem…); they’re quite well thought out courses and, despite not being a pro member, I use them for general study.

Hope you find what you’re looking for.
