For me the grammar book that stands out as a reference work are the books of Swan or Parrot
Practical English Usage (Practical English Usage, Third Edition); by Michael Swan. I have this book.
The alternative:
Grammar for English Language Teachers
by Martin Parrott
Both are top-quality and reference works.
If you are looking for a study books, starting from step one, then you should look for a course book, such as Murphy:
English Grammar in Use: A Self-study Reference and Practice Book for Intermediate Students of English - with Answers
by Raymond Murphy
Used the book myself. Very good for self-study.
