Downloading a large course (7500 words)

Hi,

First of, I really love the app, finally I can learn some Italian. The problem is that I can’t download the course (Learn Italian for Polyglots) on my phone, and I really need to be able to download it, since the 4G/3G coverage is pure on my daily commute.

I have been reading and apparently courses bigger then 3000 words have problems with the download. When will you address this?

Hi @ehsan55, speaking as a user of the app and one who has been following this problem, I know that a lot of work has gone into improving the process over the last couple of months. I know of people who have successfully downloaded large courses lately too. I don’t have any courses that large in my area of interest at the moment (unfortunately on a few different levels :wink:).

Where were you reading about the problems with courses larger than 3000 words?

Are you using a WiFi network when you are trying to download? Do you have a pro subscription? What is your current version of:

  1. memrise?;
  2. Android?;
  3. Device?

Also - does the phone have enough memory to accommodate a large download file ?

Thank you for your replay.

Yes, I’m on my WiFi, and the phone is right next to the router also

  1. I have the latest version, just updated. 2.9_3861 (26 july)
  2. Android 6.0.1
  3. One Plus 3
  4. I have about 50 GB of space, and a 6 GB RAM device

Yes, about 50GB

The device doesn’t appear to be the problem then. :slight_smile: What about the use of WiFi or cellular data? The place you were reading about the issue? Pro or no?

What happened when you tried to download the course?

No, I don’t think it’s a device issue. I have the Pro version, and if I’m not mistaken I read about the download issues under FAQ on memrise website.

When I’m on my WiFi (the router is literally 5 cm from my phone) and try to download, at first it says “gathering information” and after a while I get “download failed, check you wifi” (something along those lines) . I might try downloading via cellular data (4G), and see if that will work.

@ehsan55 ~ what is the name of the course ? Maybe I could try to download it on my Android phone and see if it works for me.

Thank you @pdao. Its 7500 words

@ehsan55 ~ is this the one ? http://www.memrise.com/course/250006/learn-italian-for-polyglots/

Yes, exactly

Okay, trying to download it now. Will let you know the results soon (hopefully)…

Well, I tried to download the course twice on my Android phone. It stopped mid-stream and threw the standard “download failed - check your network connection” kind of message. I also tried to download it twice on my iPad. The first time it failed. The second time it looks like it is just spinning its wheels at about 60% downloaded. I think I will just kill it. While I’ve had issues before with Android downloads, I don’t recall any with iOS (and I have a ton of courses on my iPad, several with more than a couple of thousand words in each). They generally download on iOS very fast. This one is taking forever. That’s probably not a good sign. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. Maybe someone else has some better insight.

No worries @pdao.

Thank you so much for your help. It seems to be a Android issue, and hopefully they will fix it soon.

I have the same problem. I think it is the android version. On the IOS I could manage downloading it twice before.

I’m using Android. I succeeded downloading spanish for polyglots (after 2nd attempt)… I think there was a bit less than 7000 entries

Hello, some of the courses you can download that are larger than 3000 words. E.g. I had had polish course that had 7000+ word and I had no problem downloading it. However I have had spanish and portuguese courses (each 7000+ words) and the android program is not able to download it.

I am using memrise 2.9-3866 and android 4.0.

Same issue here… fails halfway through downloading. Paid for premium support so I will be cancelling if this doesnt get fixed

The Russian Top 10000 words - Part 1 which is 5k words is also impossible to download. Tried many many times.

I think I saw a post stating that if this issue persist tomorrow after reinstalling the app then they look more into it, but it should be fixed by tomorrow. I could be wrong… have to find the right post to confirm
