I’m in German 2 now, but I’m afraid to forget the words of German 1. So I do revisions from time to time in German 1. Never forgot a word of German 1 until now, indeed… but will these words from the finished course really stick in my long-term memory?
Well, in my opinion, it won’t hurt to go back, at least as a refresher, to review the words you’ve already done. I do that all the time when learning new words, or when I’ve done them for quite some time and have moved on. I think that reviewing those words will only reinforce them into your brain; it’s not one of those one and done things, unless of course, you’ve got a photographic memory. Then, I’ll envy and congratulate you. But like I said, what would it hurt, especially if you’re worried about it, which I do sometimes? Here’s how I think: If you have a doubt that you might possibly forget it, review it. I hope this helps!
I think it’s a smart idea to. After a while, you will realize that you can’t remember some words and need to go back. A little practice can’t hurt anyone. I’m practicing everyday in my completed Italian 1 and slowly moving through Italian 2 and found that practice helps a lot, even though you’ve finished the course.
The main courses I do are four Swedish courses (8,000+ words, split into four separate courses) which I also curate.
I actually finished every single course last year, but knew that I had discovered things that needed changing as I went along, so, in order to go through things more systematically, I wiped my learning history of the first course and started all over again. What I have found is that my knowledge of individual words is more profound now as, through reading and listening, I have discovered more and more about how these words are used. I am happy when I get between 90% and 100% accuracy when doing a 50-word review session. Less than that and I consider that I don’t really “know” the words or phrases properly
My two cents are basically: you can review as much as you want, the more the better, probably!
