Difficult words getting stuck in the list - any ideas?

I’ve had a long standing issue now where some of the words that go into my difficult words list never leave, no matter how many times i get them correct - and i’m talking hundreds of time now.

I am studying the Memrise course A1 Spanish.
Currently i have 13 difficult words that are stuck - very frustrating when it asks you for the thousandth time to type el estudiante - gah!

I have tried logging in and out, resetting my device, deleting the app and reinstalling.
Both app and my IOS are up to date.
When i go online my difficult word count is zero, so i can’t clear the list that way.

I have sent three support tickets about this issue and I don’t get a reply from the Memrise team, other than the standard auto reply message.

If anyone else has any ideas on how to fix this i would be very grateful - it’s driving me crackers :frowning:

This smells like a nasty bug. For each of those 13 words which are displayed as difficult in the application, can you do a review session of them on the website. It’ll be great to know whether they get added automatically to your difficult words at the end of the session.

Phew!

Thanks Joshua but I think I’ve finally managed to fix it.

I had to

uninstall the app from my phone first (this was important otherwise it would undo the fix webside)
open the course on the web site, go into the word list that contained the bugged stuck word (which apparently didn’t need reviewing for another 71 days!)
go to the options tab
select preview
scroll through the words until I reached the stuck word. There I discovered there is a second small lightening bolt underneath the flower and next to the ignore circle that was indeed yellow. Odd as the difficult words list tab still read zero and wouldn’t let me practice or see any difficult words on the website.
I unchecked the small yellow lightening bolt.
Did this with all 13 stuck words.
Reinstalled the app and all the stuck words were gone!

I’m away on holiday for the next two weeks so plenty of time to test whether or not this has truly fixed the problem. Fingers crossed those pesky stuck words don’t make a return.

Interestingly, when i tried this the first time with the app still installed on my phone, the preview word lightening bolt would get turned yellow again, even though i had manually unchecked it. And still, my difficult words list tab would remain at zero. So i guess the problem must lie in the way the app communicates with the server or vice versa. I’ve no idea. i just hope it’s fixed now!!!

@Remmo, I’d done these steps for couple times in the past 6 months or so as I had exactly the same issue as yours. The most tedious thing is to remember which level contains the problematic word that is dangling. I ended up going through 50 different levels for certain words. :rage:

Now I realize that I have to be extra careful to check on the session summary screen to see if any words are undesirably marked “difficult” so I can uncheck the lightning bolt (if I really don’t think they are difficult and/or are just due to my careless mistake). Also I guess the Speed Review also generates these difficult words as eventually you will either run out of time or pick 3 wrong answers so those are considered “difficult” too. Not sure about that though. :open_mouth:

Ah, had a feeling this would be the case. Interesting how the preview mode shows the word as being difficult, however the dashboard shows no difficult words being present.

@daydaywong wondered whether unchecking the difficult words was causing the problem? I too hate it when you know the mistake was just a typo, especially when it’s hard to notice the difference between a regular i and and accented í when using the phone interface or you just miss out a space when typing at speed. I know that many of my stuck words and phrases were ones that i remember manually unchecking. Perhaps this is causing the system’s algorithms to occassionally bug out?

I’ve had a few words stuck which is why I searched this topic… but I found the solution to be a lot easier than trying to find the correct level to uncheck the word.

Just do a difficult review session, and on the summary screen / session complete screen you see a list of all the words, and can un-check the lightning bolt there.

Hope this helps someone else!

Thank you so much! this worked for me and I had stuck difficult words on two courses.
