Désolé also means...sad?

So I am starting to use the memrise site to taught myself french and so far I am enjoying it! I am using the spanish version of the first french course (currently level 3) and eveything was going smoothly until the word désolé appeared and it said désolé means sad. This appeared strange to me since as far as I know “triste” means sad.
My question is, you can use the word “désolé” to say that you are sad? or is translation problem? the word désolé can be used in other ways besides to say “sorry”?

Will appreciate your comments
