Courses *suddenly* requiring either hyphens or even strict typing

This whole situation is just ridiculous. Any serious website will have control version, so it’s not very hard to roll back to the previous version, where everything worked. If they haven’t done anything so far, I believe it’s because they don’t care. If anyone knows where Memrise stores the database files for the courses, I’ll write a program that converts that file into an SQL Database and then program my own application for testing purposes. If Memrise doesn’t give a solution, I will give one myself.

with all due respect… dear team, any news on fixing this manifold bug?

As Memrise seems to ignore their own forums, I figured I’d see if they’re more active on Twitter. Alongside all the questional ‘facts’ and dumb quotes, I found this little gem: https://twitter.com/memrise/status/776734971922972672

“We had a great visit & talk from @triketora on #diversity in #tech.Kept talking about it all day. Thanks for coming!”

Seems like Memrise is run by ideologues who are more concerned with “smashing the Silicon Valley patriarchy” than hiring competent employees based on merit. Little wonder the site never works.

Hello,

I have only been experiencing problems with commas now in repsonses, in all courses.

This really poses a problem when the course creator has included a long list of alternatives or quite long responses seperated by COMMAS. (no more problems with parentheses)

I have a dozen of this type (not more) in courses I have made and/or are curating.

I am slowly finding them and replacing alternatives so that the answers will work as they did previously (since 5 years up until 10 days ago).

So this seems like quite a waste, and surely disorienting for the learning experience.

Rectifying this post to add … the 3 points (required now) !!! quite annoying

Starting to feel like giving up memrise for the first time in years…

(off topic: to be honest, i would’t worry that much about the talks of the male owners of memrise about their male devs - don’t worry, all memrise devs are male. Relaxing thought, neh?)

This whole topic seems to me like memrise had a totally clever scripting that worked all the time until someone destroyed it and instead of reloading the old one is now “correcting” the clever script by thousands of bad subscripts, one for each single symbol.

yeah, Adam - the only and only dev at the beginnings of Memrise - made an wonderful job, although he was just a fresh graduate from Imperial College and alone with the whole job. After that, gimmicks, tingles and just problems. And the site not functioning in fact for one week almost, now (2 days without being able to review…)

For me the only good thing about the new Algo Review BUG for the web, is that it is now accepting commas etc.

I’m worried that maybe the site will never get fixed for the Review BUG. (to hell with the commas).

As sad as those stupid elections.

No use complaining, just hope it gets patched up and doesn’t have to close down or deteriorate permanently.

Where is Adam ?

The comma bug has been fixed but I’ve put up a user script that will still preserve the ‘comma accepting’ behavior that was present when the bug was in place.
I’ve also looked at the parenthesis bug, that’s not as trivial to fix unfortunately, and what I actually found is that it now ignores anything you put inside parentheses in both your response and the expected answer.

I seem to be still facing the comma bug, the tests don’t accept answers which are separated by commas unless I type them all. Is anybody else still facing this problem?

Yes! the comma bug which was fixed is now back with a vengeance. You have to type the whole phrase which is really bad when you have a synonym column with lots of alternatives which doesn’t work again. I hope memrise tells us what’s happening soon.

Same problem with obliques.

Thanks @sandslane for reassuring me that I don’t suffer on my own  I really hope Memrise will do something about this quickly.

this is really unbelievable… the same bug again and again and again…

Strict typing is back again. I couldn’t use the site for nearly two weeks because of this bug, and now, after only four days of it finally working, it’s back. Pathetic. How, when it’s broken more often than not, is anyone supposed to rely on this site?

Ah I am gathering all the problems for typing and tapping. Can someone please help me complete this by following this form?

Give me the course that you are taking or reviewing
Give me the type of test that you are taking
Give me an example of your sentence
Give me the expected behavior that you want
For example,

Hyphen not working specifically in @diegovizia 's The Ultimate Kanji Course.

Edit: Nevermind… seems to be working now.

The COMMA bug is back

whenever the response is xxx, yyy, zzz

before you could respond xxx

and it was correct

or yyy

and it was correct

or zzz

and it was correct

now you have to type all xxx, yyy, zzz

so either users can start learning the enitre list all over again or ignore the card because it is just a hassle.

so many courses were built understanding the old technique that now many cards are broken.

bouhahahahah, grrrrr, such a shame

not happy

good morning,@flamantrose (no offence intended, just a silly tiny pun). Read the last third of this: comma does not function as separator anymore, huge work in front (“für lau”/ solely for your personal glory in the memrise heaven, or hell) for many a course creator: Has there been a change in the way memrise treats commas?

good evening @Hydroptere

Yes in fact I’ve just spent 15 minutes on that thread thanks!

Since before the “web version blackout” last week, I perused my own courses to accomodate by using alternative answers with the parts when I saw there could be somme difficulty.

I still have some “work” to do there. But most of my own courses are intact regardless. Some of the other courses I am taking are not.

And from what I can see from the thread, there are many courses that are suffering more from this change and it is a real shambles.

A real wake up call as you put it!

I just try to remind myself, what counts is not the Memrise database but what remains in my own mind.

Albeit, I would love to download the data from my courses  with or without commas…

Hang in there
