[Course Forum] "Suomi Monostyle" (Level 1, 2, 3) by samulili1d

These courses have unfortunately been long abandoned (the owner wasn’t replying on the old forum long before it was closed), but although they need some maintenance, they are worth keeping.

@Lien, could you please check them for me and add me as a contributor, if possible? I’ll start by fixing the English typos, but if anyone knows of any other problems there, let me know.

Thanks.

Maybe my request got lost.

Is it @Lien we’re supposed to ask when we want to become contributors? Or someone else?

Hi @widle !

I was looking for information about this course so I am happy to notice that things are moving
I am finishing the first level, and I find it very useful are efficient, as a Duolingo user. So far I cannot tell if there are Finnish mistakes in the course. I struggle with the choice nominative / partitive every time and it seems to me that the sentences do not always follow the rules stated in the wiki page http://suomi-monostyle.wikia.com/wiki/Suomi_Monostyle_Wiki Are they mistakes in the first level as well or it is just me who can’t get this partitive thing in my head ?

I probably won’t be able to help you to improve this course given my beginner’s level, but I will willing to contribute in other ways if possible. It would be too bad to let this course die, there are already very few people actively learning in it. What would be your plans for improving the course ?
I have seen that other memories Finnish course have audio in them, would it be possible to add it ? Same thing for the mems.

Hello @PierreGranjon,

unfortunately, things aren’t moving yet, because I haven’t received any reply from Memrise yet, but thanks for reminding me. I’ll try again.

The partitive is a tough skill for a beginner (but necessary). I remember thinking there must be many mistakes in the course, but after a while I began to see why it was this or that. Some of them might be still wrong, though. If you’re in doubt about some of the sentences, post them here and we’ll try to work it out.

Audio: it’s possible but someone needs to create the files to be added - either a native speaker who would be willing to record all of them or by a text-to-speech machine but I don’t have any experience with them. If you know anything about it, maybe this is where you could help. (But not before someone gets access to the course, anyway.)

Mems: Anyone can create mems and then they are available for the others, too.

Hi @widle,

Just a suggestion that may be worth keeping in mind, if you eventually take over these courses and want to add audio to them.

There is a guy who added a lot of audio files to my image-based course that you are taking. He came onto the old course forum and offered his services. He did an excellent job and was very quick. He had a way of quickly identifying and linking existing audio files from different sources.

Here is a link to his Memrise profile. He has created a number of Finnish courses but I’m not sure if he is still active. You could ask Lien to email him. http://www.memrise.com/user/noradio/courses/teaching/

He hasn’t joined this forum yet.

Thank you @alanh for the tip.

Moi !

Thanks for the advice, I will try to keep the rules in mind and develop my sixth sense before I complain about the course

I have neither the skills not the hardware to record the audio, so I will let the pros take care of it. One other thing that need to be done is to check on the wikia, the last chapters of level 3 seem empty.

I will let you know if I spot a mistake and I stay tuned for the course update

I’m not sure anything can be done about the wikia, that’s the author’s work. And even if they let anyone else in to help, it should be a native speaker or at least an experienced learner. I don’t dare to do anything else than correct a few obvious mistakes and possibly raise some questions.

No answer from Memrise just yet, so this is all still just pure theory.
