[Course Forum] Mandarin Chinese 1-3 by Memrise

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your contributions!

I just came back from holiday (happy new year by the way!) and will take a look at the questions/comments in the forum this week as soon as possible.

Best,
Yi

Thanks! Amended!

Hi there! Yes you can click on specific levels and then “learn new words”

Hi there, good point! I got what you mean

For translation, we tend to give a version that’s frequently used in the user’s own language rather than a word for word translation. But! We do provide a literal translation (word for word) on the leaning screen where you can see how phrases/sentences are structured in the target language.

I hope that solves your queries but please do let me know if anything unclear.

Best,
Yi

Hey Sindarus,

Thanks for your feedback! Yes indeed, issues caused by spaces and tones are definitely on the top of the list that we are trying to fix. I’m thinking about changing the way we present and test pinyin so spaces won’t be required from users’ input. We also need to make a decision regarding the weight tone-marking carries in tests. This would require collaboration between us linguists and the developers but we are on it!

Best,
Yi

If I might make a suggestion - in another piece of software we used always 1,2,3,4 for the four tones as input. E.g. I would type ‘ni3 jiao4 shen2me5 ming2zi4’ when tested - works very universally, and the learner is still tested to get the tones right.
As said: only as user input in a n answer on a test. The screen would always display with tone marks.

Hello

I’m thinking about starting learning Chinese in a few weeks. I looked at the Chinese for French speakers courses and noticed that they are not as complete as the Chinese for English speakers courses. Why? is it just temporary?

Also, I have the impression that the Chinese for English speakers courses are much bigger than the other ones I saw (English, Russian…), but there are only 3 of them. Is there a reason why there is not 7 courses as for the other languages?

Thanks,
Florian

I’m having a problem with part of this course, using the Android app. I can’t complete the learning on: 12 Unit 3.1 - Public Transport Listening. When I select that section (or it comes up for review) and I select Learn New Words, I get an error saying “Sorry, there was an error loading the session!” Previously this section has caused the app to crash, but now it just gives that error.

I also get the same problem on: 39 Unit 8.3 - School (Listening)

I noticed that the tone mark seems to be on the wrong letter for jǐu (should be jiǔ) and níu (should be niú). The same mistake is made in every word that contains these as well. There might be other words like it, but these are the ones I found

Hi, I found a translation error in Chinese 2, learn from French.
nǐ yào shénme liángcài?should translate to “quels plats froids est-ce que tu veux ?” (Or even better “quel plat froid voulez-vous ?”)

Memrise translates 凉菜 to hot dish!?

Thanks for flagging! This has been fixed now. If you log out and log in again you should see the change.

That’s correct! Thanks for flagging. I’ve now fixed it. If you log out and log in again you should see the change.

Hi Florian,

Thanks for your query! Normally when creating courses we start from a target language for English speakers because English is the work language here that everyone speaks and having it makes it easier for cross checking. The localisation for other language speakers starts after the English is ready so the progress might be different across languages with English being the biggest course.

Also, the current Chinese course has 1-3 but items wise, it has almost the same number of items as the other languages because the Chinese course has characters as an extra element to learn. But we are working on the new content and will have more or less the same total number of items across languages so bear with us!

Btw, 你开始学中文了吗?

Thanks,
Yi

Hi Mai,

Maybe try to reinstall the app and see if it works. We’ve got fixes going out every now and then and it would be good to update the app regularly to ensure best performance of the app. Also, updates of the app can come with new features that you might not want to miss (e.g. pronunciation feedback etc)!

Thanks,
Yi

Yes, it is fine now! Thank you from the quick correction.

Thanks for the reply, not yet (thanks Google Translate ) I’d like to finish the Russian course first

Does your second paragraph mean that an important change is coming soon in the Chinese course? In this case, I can wait till then, instead of starting the course just before. Can you give an approximate date for those changes?

Hi, I found an error in Mandarin Chinese 3 for English Speakers:

yínháng jiù zài nàlǐ (银行就在那里) - the bank is just over there?

You have to delete the question mark in the English part because this is not a question.
