[Course Forum] Let's Learn Japanese course series (formerly SGJL)

Another question Nukemarine: Why do you ask the kanji from English to Japanese? Is that more beneficial to the learning process? Wouldn’t it be better for understanding Japanese to focus more on the Japanese to English direction?

SGJL 11 - A Dict. of Basic Japanese Grammar pt 4, level 1:

偶に has ぐに as the pronunciation.

Couple of things:

SGJL 11 - Tae Kim’s Japanese Grammar pt 04, level 2. The three sentences, “Why didn’t you come?/I had class.” could use some parenthetical notes to distinguish them. (Also, any chance of audio for Tae Kim 3 and 4?)

SGJL 11 - A Dict. of Basic Japanese Grammar pt 4, level 3. 和英辞典 has the wrong reading, according to Jisho. Should be わえいじてん.

SGJL 06 - A Dict. of Basic Japanese Grammar pt 2, level 11. 小田さんは六つの時バッハを弾く「ことが出来た」。The audio is pronouncing Bach like a drunkard.

Thanks!

Hi, can I find out what’s the different between the two SGJL 03s? Is there any benefit of choosing one over the other? Thanks!

Both courses are technically the same in that you’re learning the same kanji. However, the two books: Remembering the Kanji and Kodansha Kanji Learner Course have differences in what they teach. RTK is more about a unique English “keyword” that brings about a visual story that helps you write the Kanji from memory. KKLC is more about various meanings per Kanji and a story to help that in addition to including other reference information.

Both courses again teach the same Kanji from 2001.Kanji.Odyssey book 1, but you’ll see that the order, English keyword prompt and stories are different.

SGJL 09 - A Dict. of Basic Japanese Grammar pt 3, level 4.

いつから切手を集め「始めた」んですか。 / 子供の時から集め「始めました」。The first sentence lacks audio.

Sorry for the late reply. The Kanji course is different in that it’s a technique of learning as if English had a Kanji as a part of its language. It’s not teaching Japanese use of Kanji. In doing so, it gives learners a similar advantage that native Chinese speakers have with their own knowledge of Kanji which looks the same but is used differently from the way Japanese use it.

So you quickly learn to recognize and have a rough idea about the meaning of a Kanji, then you learn how Japanese use it.

Thanks for the explanation. Really appreciate your course!

ヶ月 audio is がつ instead of かげつ

Yo Nukemarine,

i really enjoy learning the kanji with your heisig courses. studying the rtk1 book in 555 words parts feels more satisfying - learning only about 500 words in a course is less overwhelming than having to learn the whole 2200 and because of the rearrangement by order of frequency i need not feel like wasting any time.

I just wanted to know when are you going to upload
SGJL 13 - RTK + 2k1KO pt 3 (1111 - 1560) and
SGJL 18 - RTK + 2k1KO pt 4 (1561 - 2001)?

I think i’m going to finish the second part in about 2 weeks.

SGJL 09 - A Dict. of Basic Japanese Grammar pt 3, level 3.

この中でどの映画が「一番」面白いですか。 / この日本の映画でしょう。No audio first sentence.

恐ろ「しい 」/ 難「しい 」/ 恋「しい 」 / 嬉「しい 」/ 親「しい 」/ 涼「しい 」Audio is ジョギングを始めました。

Then

悲「しい 」/ 楽「しい 」/ ら「しい 」 / 美味「しい 」/ 苦「しい 」 / 頼も「しい 」

and

悔「しい 」/ 厳「しい 」/ 羨ま「しい 」/ 寂「しい 」 / 惜「しい 」/ 妬ま「しい 」have no audio.

今日は月曜日ですよ。 / 「すると」あのデパートは休みですね。No audio first sentence.

息子は今高校三年です。 / 「すると」、来年は大学受験ですね。No audio first sentence.

私は自転車を買いました。「すると」弟も欲しがりました。Isn’t this missing あ?弟も欲しがりました

Since I’m doing “daily” livestreams now, I decided to do some course improvements a little bit after the stream. At the moment that’s getting audio files uploaded. After that I’ll get the to uploading RTK files (all four courses) next.

thank you very much

SGJL 11 - Tae Kim’s Japanese Grammar pt 04, level 9.

大樹 Daiki (first name). Audio is Taiki, which is correct, according to Jisho, so Daiki into Taiki. (Or even たいじゅ for the vocabulary of the kanji, “huge/big tree.”

No, the sentence is correct since he’s talking about somebody else’s potential thoughts. Look up the garu - がる entry on page 123 for further explanation.

That first sentence you listed is from Intermediate book, so I deleted all the sentences in that series as they’ll be in the next set of courses.

The second word was meant to be チップ for tip. I also changed the associated sentence.

Thanks for doing this. Hope the courses have been fun to go through.

I’m going to defer to Tae Kim on this one and keep it Daiki as he says it’s a name in this case. Names are annoyingly varied at times. I fixed the other sentence’s audio as well.

Thanks for all the updates and explanations. Going through the courses has tremendously assisted with finer grammar points.

Since the sentences you removed were from part three of dict. basic japanese, are you planning on repurposing some of the levels for part four? Don’t want to start them if they’re going to be moved.

SGJL 11 - A Dict. of Basic Japanese Grammar pt 4, level 2.
