[Course Forum] Japanese 1-7 by Memrise

Alright, went back and double checked and here is my issue: ”どのくらい” (level 43) and ”いくら” (level 38) are both quizzed as “how much” by the program. It’s impossible to know which one it wants from me… is there a way to phrase the question differently?

Personally I can’t tell the difference (no surprise, I’m a newbie :stuck_out_tongue:) , just that どのくらいのながさ is used in the “how long” term. Is the one maybe meant to be for price and the other goes rather in the “how much quantity of X” ?

Hi Mariko,

First of all, thank you for all of your hard work on this series. I feel very fortunate to have such a great resource.

Is this update why Japanese courses 4-7 are not currently available? I just ‘finished’ Japanese 3 today, and am getting nervous that I can’t see where to pick up again tomorrow. I have a goal of completing courses 1-7 before returning to Japan next summer… if you need a beta tester to get going with course 4 please let me know!!!

Hi BinaryToast!

Thank you for the post. You’re right いくら is how much (money), and どのくらい is how much (everything else… includes time, length etc). I’ve now added brackets to the English translation so you will know which is which!

Hi Bryan_Gilstein8,

I’m so glad to hear that the course has been useful for you!

Japanese 4-7 actually have been ready to be uploaded, but since we decided that the Japanese course will be re-released in the two new versions, they’re put them on hold. We are not going to make them available in the same format as the currently existing courses. We aim to have the new versions of 1-3 by the end of the month and 4-7 by the end of next month, so I hope you get plenty of exercise before going back to Japan again!

Unfortunately we are not looking for course testers at the moment, but you will be notified via the app (or on this forum) as soon as the new sections are out. Thanks!

Hi guys!

Meet the natives mode is now available on Japanese 1, 2 and 3 for English speakers. Check it out!

Could you at least restore the existing Japanese 4 so that I may continue my learning while waiting for the improved course to be released? Asking me to wait for a month and a half to proceed is an extremely hard pill to swallow, especially after just paying for a pro account. I don’t understand why myself and other users would be left in this situation…

Hi Bryan,

I’m afraid I can’t really ‘restore’ Japanese 4-7 as they were never uploaded. They now need to be reformatted to the new versions before going online. I’m so sorry that you’re having to wait for them.

I will try to do them as soon as possible, but I don’t think I will be able to do it in November… Can you tell me which new versions of the course you prefer, so I can work on that first? (the all romaji course or the full script course).

Hi Mariko,

I think that I understand the situation better now. It appears that perhaps when I first downloaded Memrise in June that the official Japanese course had only recently been created. However from a user perspective I saw -

  • This forum thread titled Japanese 1-7.
  • A visual layout within the app with 7 places for each part of the course.
  • No mention here or in the app that the course was incomplete.

I hope if my comments came across as expectant or disappointed that you would now see where I misunderstood the situation. Please accept my apologies.

I appreciate that you’ve asked for me feedback  I would encourage you to please focus on the full script course. It now would seem almost strange to attempt learning Japanese without it. In comparison with a previous experience learning some Spanish, despite it’s reputation I’ve actually found memorizing Japanese vocabulary to be easier. I attribute this in part to the visual associations that a new script provides when encoding new items to memory.

Also, while I’m sure that it would be nice to release courses 4-7 all at once, please consider prioritizing course 4 to be finalized first and released as soon as it’s ready. That way learners such as myself who have completed the current offerings can be working through course 4 while the subsequent courses are finished.

I think it the meantime I will work on reinforcing my knowledge of course 3 through continued practice. I noted some errors along the way, so I will make it a point to take notes on where they are exactly to report them here.

Thank you again for all of your hard work! I am very driven/motivated with my language learning for Japanese, and I appreciate you putting a wonderful tool in my hands to do so

Hi Bryan_Gilstein8,

Thank you for your input! I appreciate every single person who takes their time to post here! All feedback are useful!

It never occurred to me that we were giving the impression to the users that all Japanese courses were available. We should have communicated this more clearly. Another thing that NEVER occurred to me is to do Japanese 4 before working on revised 1, 2 and 3. I think this is a great idea! (and makes me feel a little bit like George Lucas). Since the full script course seems to be more in demand than the romaji course, I will work on the revised courses in the following order:

Japanese (full script) 4, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 then Japanese (romaji) 4, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7.

Even though I’m a native Japanese speaker, everyday I notice that there are so many shortcomings and improvements in the course that only learners of Japanese can point out. Thanks for the input!

First of all, thank you very much for your efforts, despite all the (mostly minor) issues your curses have been a great help in learning Japanese, at least in my book, as has your quick handling of issues and requests. Very much appreciated!

Also, I have another question! In the revised full script curses, are you going to use Kanji/kana right from course 1 lesson 1? I wager we would need repeat 1-3 considering they’ll be new courses, however I might skip those if they;re going the “slow” approach with first teaching hiragana and only little Kanji.

お疲れ様です!

Hi Mariko!

Meet the natives is awesome! But is there any way to see the video fragments for courses and levels already completed?

Right now the only way to see videos for completed levels seems to restart a level or when you make a mistake during review. It would be nice if they also show in preview mode.

PS: for course 3 level 20, when prompted with 点 it only accepts the answer if you write “point; dot” precisely. Just writing “point” does not seem valid anymore. Also in course 1 (I forgot the level), when prompted with “is good (polite)” you have to write out いいです(よいです) while before いいです was sufficient.

Hi 88Timothy,

I’m so glad to hear that you’re enjoying Meet the Natives mode! I find them fascinating too, and also nostalgic as I haven’t been back in a while

If you’re a Pro user, you can use meet the natives mode any time on the completed levels by tapping on the mode selector. If you’re non-Pro, I’m afraid you won’t be able to trigger it on command.

I will now look into the second part of the post regarding accepted answers. Thanks.

I see, thanks!

It seems now that all kanji have this problem again of requiring the exact meanings in the correct order rather than just one meaning. At least for my course 3 review I have this problem for all kanji.

Hi there! I’m doing the Japanese 2 course right now, but I think there is an error in one of the questions and it won’t allow me to continue unless I answer it correctly, which is impossible, since one of the necessary symbols isn’t available to use (“ha”/“wa”). No matter what combination I try, it won’t mark it as correct.

Hi Jl_D1

Sorry about that, it’s now fixed.

Hi MarikoMiz — thank you!

Hello again! I’ve found yet another bug, I think.

I’m at Japanese 2, yet sometimes I still get suggestions in romaji from the first course. Sometimes to the point where it completely defeats the purpose of having the question to start with. :frowning:

Another screenshot with related issue:

That said, thank you for your hard work and for staying ever so vigilant! It is much appreciated!

EDIT: Here are a couple more screenshots to clarify further how ridiculous it is. It’s really taking all the fun out of the learning, and this is painfully common. :frowning:

Hi, I am enjoying this course so far.

I am only beginner, in Japanese 1. I think I encountered a bug - just now started Level 9 and as question I got kanji for water (水), but in the answers there was two "water"s - one of them wrong - but no distinctions between them.

I didn’t screenshot it. Please write if you need me to do something else to identify the bug.

Thank you for help,
Margita

A little bug in japanese 2.

I can see 454 / 455 mastered, but I can’t learn the last word. When I press the button to learn it, appears “the page does not exist”. So I can’t complete it. :frowning:

Hey,

There are consistencies within Japanese 2 in regard to the use of です and the need for a topic+は.

There are quite a few examples, but I haven’t written them all down, I think the whole of Japanese 2 should be checked for these:

  1. ‘little’ is the prompt and すこしです is the answer
  2. ‘I don’t have water’ is the prompt and 'みずがあります’ is the answer

In contrast:

  1. ‘is loyal’ is the prompt and the answer is ‘ちゅうじつです’ which makes perfect sense
  2. ‘I have to pee’ is the prompt with the answer 'わたしはおしっこをしなくてはいけません’

Maybe I missing something regarding the necessity of topic conclusion in these sentences, but to me it seems inconsistent. If the topic(marked with は) is indeed optional or implied, is it possible to accept both answers? Failing that, would it not be possible to include a reasonable hint in the English prompt?

Thanks!
