That’s a really good point. Although female and male voice may sound different to non-native ears, they are still recognized as same word by native speakers. The only difference is just a variation in intonation. That being said, the male voice is a little bit more natural in my opinion, and the female offers more ‘proper’ pronunciation, in a more textbook-like way. I think it’s helpful to have access to both.

There are double or tripple entries of the same word in the tab test level 8 and the word “being wrong” that is on the Android and the web.

Ç & ş are Turkish letters which make the ch & sh sounds respectively. Why are those in Japanese course for English speakers … I don’t know… buggy?
I guessed the language totally wrong. Was thinking it was Russian language. 
Russian letters for these sounds are ч & ш

I’m not sure if it’s an issue with the official Japanese course, or if it’s a general issue with Memrise, but Kanji are a huge pain in my posterior.
Take the following example:
本 = origin;main;book
Sometimes, I’m told to select the correct words from a list of words.
If I don’t select them in the above order, I’m “wrong”.
Why does it matter if I select “main;origin;book” or “book;main;origin” or whatever? I can see why I have to select them all, but I don’t see why the order matters.
If it’s a sentence, then yes, the order does matter. But this is just a Kanji with multiple possible meanings. The order of the meanings really shouldn’t matter at all.
Also, why do we only get Kanji and English? Why don’t we also get the Japanese pronunciation?
I know that Kanji have multiple pronunciations, such as 山 which can be read as “yama” or “san”, but that’s not a reason to not tell us at least one of them, no?
And finally, where’s the Katakana?
A Japanese course without Katakana is ridiculous… “Coffee” is spelled 「コーヒー」, not 「こーひー」!

I tried to tell them the same thing some time ago. But there is higher power.
Same goes to katakana. You can type foreign words in katakana and it should be accepted as correct. I think that was the only thing Mariko could do (to add alternatives)

Thank you for your post! You might want to Ctrl + F search this forum and see what has been mentioned about the Katakana/Kanji in this course. To give you a summary, in order to cater for the ‘mass’ users, the course only covers the most basic script, namely Hiragana, and some Kanji, where meanings are taught instead of how they’re pronounced. You’re absolutely right that ‘coffee’ or other word items that are ‘borrowed’ should appear in Katakana. The Katakana are showed in the ‘attributes’ column, so that the user has the option to learn or to not learn those words. If you’re using Japanese keyboard on your computer, Katakana are accepted as correct answers.
Now to the more exciting part: the official Memrise Japanese has been out for a few months now and we are seeing increasing demand for an updated course that teaches all elements of the scripts (hiragana, katakana, and kanji in the way they’re used in a sentence). We have come to the conclusion that it is not possible to create a Japanese course that is one-size-fits-all. In response to this, we are going to split the existing Japanese course into 2 different courses. a) Course that teaches absolutely everything in Romaji, for those who only want to learn how to speak, and do not want to go through the trouble of learning any script. b) Course that teaches all of hiragana, katakana, kanji (including pronunciation) for those who want to read and write Japanese as well. Since motivation for learning a language, and an extent to which the users want to learn it are different for everybody, I believe this will be the solution to the issue.
While we work on creating the new version of the Japanese course, I hope you continue to learn on the existing course. Thank you again for your comments and I apologize the frustration this must have caused for you. @atikker thanks for your input and for always helping the other users on this forum.

I really like the Japanese course, but I have problems reading the sentences on my smartphone, because the characters are too small (especially in turbo mode). Is there a possibility to have fewer white space and bigger characters?

in android app Im getting the Kanji for Bamboo as a empty square or crossed square
ive tried updating language and that doesnt make any difference but it seems to display correctly in other places
when i look up on website (Japanese 1 Level 15 Cracking Kanji)
i find “bamboo ⺮” instead of “竹” which i get if i enter “take”(たけ) onm my phone or https://www.japandict.com/たけ
What is “⺮” as it seem to be incorrect

Thanks for your post. You are indeed right that word for bamboo is 竹. As you might be aware, kanji is made up from different parts (or ‘radicals’) and ⺮is a radical that means bamboo, therefore it is not incorrect. With that being said, I receive similar feedback quite often and I think it’s not worth having ⺮as item if it will only continue to confuse people. I will replace the ⺮ to 竹.
