[Course Forum] A Lesson Cantonese (with audio)

Course Creator: @Tianhe

This is the new place to post your thoughts (course errors, general comments) on the course A Lesson Cantonese (with audio). Please note that all the submissions (course errors and general comments) to the previous forum have been lost. Please post any that you recall or find here as a reply.

@Tianhe, as the course forums have been phased out in preference to this forum, I have taken the liberty of creating this [Course Forum] topic on your behalf.

Continuing the discussion from [Course Forum] Another Lesson in Cantonese (with audio):

(((@sifushano: sorry, this is about http://www.memrise.com/course/90676/a-lesson-cantonese-with-audio/. Do you have contributor status in this one? if yes, level 24, one has goek3 for both leg and foot, which is of course ok, but as user I have a 50% chance to get the right one … many thanks ))

No, I don’t have access to this one. I also do not see @tianhe in the user list in the community.

I always thought it strange that it used the common traditional character 腳 for leg and then what is the simplified version 脚 for foot. That said, I cannot recall an occasion where this was tested and both options were available as choices. I know that the algorithm for selecting answer candidates has changed (trying to make it tougher) since the last time I was tested on this though. Have you experienced this or are you preparing against the possibility?

Hanping (based on CantoDict) claims 脚 is a variation of 腳.

The Unihan (Unihan Character DB (extended)) extract from Pleco supports that claim as the SEMANTICVARIANT field (below) indicates.

Thanks, @sifushano . (I using a HK dictionary, not the pleco) You’ve been through that course: how many such problems are in the second half? What do you think, should I quit it?

No. Generally the course was pretty good I thought. One of the better long courses I’ve done yet.

I have only really been doing courses in this section of the Cantonese Quarter too so I have not had much exposure to courses in the Jyutping section and no courses outside of Cantonese within the greater memrise community. Have to save something for later

Actually, it just occurred to me, even though foot can be referred to with 腳 or 脚,足部 zuk¹bou⁶ is unambiguous, which I tend to prefer.

many thanks

There is a free Cantonese dictionary available in Pleco … but I think it is more app-based than browser or PC, but don’t quote me …
