[Course forum] A guide to Japanese Grammar - Tae Kim - by StrategyFocusSuccess, curated by colva

Dear all, I’m now maintaining this course. I’ve just made a change to the katakana level, so that it prompts with katakana and requires answers in romaji. Apologies if this means your learning has been lost, but the previous way around just involved typing the english letters and hitting return, which didn’t seem very useful.

Not sure where to write. But in this course there is a filthy bug. Like with the word “student”. When I answer the question, I see double answers:

STUDENT — is:

  1. がくせい
  2. ひと
  3. がくせい
  4. うみ

Same with kanjis.

Hi @Nopinopa. This is happening because there’s lots of duplicate words in the course. There’s nothing I can do about it, sadly, as even if I delete all the duplicates, Memrise keeps them in the database so will offer them as multiple choice options.

But it shouldn’t be a problem for you for very long - as soon as you have learnt the words, Memrise will only ever ask you to type them rather than to choose from multiple choice (I learnt them ages ago, and had forgotten about this problem as it’s so long since I experienced it).

Good luck!

Memrise is not supposed to display duplicates as choices, so this is a Memrise fault unless there’s something different about those two different answers.

Well done. This is not the only thing wrong with this course, just a very obvious error. I don’t want to sound like an ungrateful prick, in fact I thank every course creator who took the time to create a course, but I did waste my time with this particular one. You can tell there is something wrong with a course when it is so bloated that you have to IGNORE half of the chapters. By the way, requiring the student to produce the language that he already knows (English, in this case) while trying to learn a different language (Japanese, in this case) is so outrageously mind-boggling that I can only shake my head at this CURIOUS decision (very curious, you get what I mean?). To everyone who thinks about starting this course: Save your time and pick the alternative, this one belongs in the trash.

Could you please a larger, much larger Japanese font? The characters are way too small, especially if there are over 10 lines. Thank you.
