[Course Forum] 400 Words of TOEFL - Intermediate English by Memrise

Hello!

This Topic is about 400 Words of TOEFL course, created by Memrise.

I’d like to report a few inaccuracies I’ve found in the course. I hope this is the right place to do that.

Below is the list of inaccuracies I found. There may be others I didn’t notice. Or maybe I’ve noticed something I shouldn’t  Anyway, here they are:

Level 1
adversely — adverb with definition of an adjective
to obtain — would be nice to add ‘acquire’ to the definition. Similarly it would be helpful to add ‘obtain’ to the definition of ‘acquire’. This is useful when you have to guess the word from the definition and you are not sure which one the system is expecting.

Level 2
exponentially — probably the more accurate definition would be “at in INCREASING rate”

Level 4
an intermediary — a noun with definition of an adjective
psychic — an adjective with definition of a noun. Or else if “psychic” means a person who is sensitive to parapsychological forces or influences, than the definition should be amended

Level 5
inherent — an adjective with definition of a noun

Level 7
a vein — singular noun with definition of plural. Can be confusing
fatally — adverb with definition of adjective. “Fatal” would be more accurate, I think.

Level 8
rigor — noun with definition of adjective
Orwellian — adjective with definition of noun

Level 9
to be in the trenches — a verb phrase with definition of an adverb

Level 10
to acquire — would be nice to add “obtain” to the definition (See notes to Level 1)

Level 11
entrepreneurial — adjective with definition of noun
proportionately — adverb with definition of adjective

Level 12
cynically — adverb with definition of adjective
intrusively — adverb with definition of adjective

Level 14
deviant — adjective with definition of adverb

Level 15
associate — would be nice to add “to” to be consistent with all other verbs in this course.

Level 17
a conflict — noun with definition of verb

Level 18
objectively — adverb with definition of adjective
esthetically — adverb with definition of adjective

Parts of speech are also occasionally indicated incorrectly. I didn’t make a list of those because I can’t see the parts of speech except when in Review or Learn mode.

I hope this was helpful.

Best regards.

Hi. I would like to add feasibly to the list of adverbs which are shown as adjectives. I really love the service but these inaccuracies are very confusing and annoying.

Hello! I think the name of this course should be changed. I have been teaching English for 8 years and I would say the level of this vocabulary is C1 / Advanced, not Intermediate (B1)

Hi,
could you change the category of these two words in Level 5, Science and Research? I always fail them because I write the adjective but they are asking for the adverb.
Thank you.

intuitively — by means of unconscious reasoning
consciously — with awareness of one’s actions

I find it super strange but seems like nobody in Memrise team is interested to fix this course.

Hi @Carmen_Beste

Thanks for the tag.
I’ve made a few corrections based on the comments above.

Best wishes,

Lien

As of 2020, lots of errors still present. Lots of adverbs tagged as adjectives, for example. Please fix it.
