I’ve been curious about creating courses lately and have taken a small-hiatus temporarily just to make sure of a few things.
If I create a course without audio, am I allowed to use images for that course that I find on say Wikipedia, or elsewhere on Google? Do I need permission for these images before I can use them?
If I do create a course with audio, do I need permission from the source that made the audio?
Also, if I create the audio myself, what would be recommended to make the pronunciation clips?
Sorry if it isn’t clear, just sort of thinking and typing at the same time.
There is wiki commons - a good source of free to use images.
Some audio sources allow non commercial use, a lot of people use forvo for audio.
If it’s a private course no-one else will ever see it so there’s no real problem.
A few public courses that copied material from other learning sources have been removed from Memrise at the copyright owners request. (The courses had the name of copied source in the title so were easy to find).
Credit where credit’s due, but generally you should be OK using stuff unless it’s owned by an entity that actively hunts down infringers!
I would look into creatives commons licensing, if I were you. You can search for images using google images through the tools > usage rights menu. I'd be inclined to check that they marked them correctly though.
