Constant repetition ...?

Hi, I think there may be something wrong with my app and it’s repeating itself… I am learning Portuguese and in the first lesson I had to write or select ‘Hi’ about 8 times.
I am on (I think) the 3rd session/lesson (I’m not sure how it’s even structured) and I’ve had to write or select ‘many’ (muito) 8 times out of 14 questions.
I believe there may be some kind of glitch as there is a lot of repetition… please can anyone confirm if this is normal, as, at this rate, I think it will take years to learn the language and months to even get past the basics.

Thanks

Memrise uses a 6 flower planting step before the NEW word is learned.

I have no idea why it shows it 8 times on your side.

If you fail the typing question, you may expect another typing request…or the rest of ~3 steps is planted only by multiple-choice.

Thanks for the explanation. I just thought this was odd as, as I said, if several minutes is spent on learning one single word then surely the whole ‘course’ would take years, or at least months to complete…

If you want to faster learn words with no multi planting steps, you can have a look at http://www.languagecourse.net vocabulary trainer VT.

They provide a FAQ how their team experiences learning the basic words in a language.

The android app has a nicer GUI than the website, but lacks it’s full keyboard typing feature in quiz mode, especially if you want to use the Android app with an Android emulator like Bluestacks, NOX, VMWare,…

There also seems to be at least one bug in the web interface hiding one (the 2nd) “Yes” button.

I also once had data (word) losses on the Android app on Bluestacks V2, just like I had with DuoLingo “cached offline lessons”, including losses of learned words and some index card boxes, even my account had syncronized to the VT server. Maybe it was because I also tried to use it offline (no WLAN) on Bluestacks.
I am not sure what had caused that trouble and the problem was not traced or discussed with their technical support…
I have not uses the app since then or tested with Bluestacks V3…

Thanks again. Aside from the technical aspects you have described (and not being familiar with what Bluestacks, NOX or VT… are) I am simply curious as to why this app seems to be unnecessarily laborious. I just had a question where a text statement came up and I was required to ‘Copy the Portuguese (BR) for the English above and press Enter:’ What purpose could copy and pasting some text from one line to the line below possibly serve in regards to learning development? It’s not even making me repeat the text in any way which could help me to memorise it…
Many thanks

Memrise is easy. Keep adding some new words, and do the reviews when they are due, that simple.
In the meantime the spaced repetition algorithm of Memrise does its best to make sure you won’t forget anything. That’s the key feature of the Memrise, which makes it really-really effective and great learning tool. When you learn a words, you will see repetitions quite often in the beginning, but if you always give the right answer, the longer the review cycle will be. On the other hand, when you miss an answer, you’ll see that word sooner again. Memrise makes sure you won’t forget anything by monitoring your answers and adjusting when to show which item. …and if you won’t forget anything but keep adding new words, you will eventually learn the language.

I just thought this was odd as, as I said, if several minutes is spent on learning one single word then surely the whole ‘course’ would take years, or at least months to complete…

If you want to learn a language, you have to invest time anyway. If you need approx. 400 learning hours to get a fluency, there’s no wonder method that cuts down this, let’s say, to 40 hours. You can cut it to 360 with a better method, maybe. But you will need months, or years - depends on how much time you learn a day.

But hey, it’s matter of viewpoint. You need JUST minutes to learn a single word (not hours) and you need JUST months to finish the official courses (not years). Still a good offer.

Is it makes sense to learn words faster?
I think no. I started Memrise roughly 1 year ago. The counter today says cca 6400 words learned, I’d say it’s 6000 useful items from Spanish courses. I’m happy with my progress.

The official Spanish 1-7 took me 5 months to complete. In the beginning, I could average 15 items/day.
I think that’s still great that I could learn that many words per day, in a completely new language.

When later on I got more familiar with Spanish, I could make 20-25 words/day in the first 5000 words course. But not more. I had days when I planted 75 words, but then I needed the next 2 days to catch up with the reviews. My brain had the limit, not the Memrise. Learning new words any faster was pointless.

Are there other more effective methods that could make me learn 30 words/day instead of 25? Or 8000 words / year instead of 6000? Maybe. But Memrise is fun and addictive enough that I didn’t quit in this 1 year, that’s the biggest accomplishment.

BTW I use the web version, as I found the app too easy and doesn’t let me commit errors. I use all typing script quite often - typing in the same item 5 times in a planting session is more effective than selecting 4 times in multiple choice questions. Slower planting but better remembering. Overall learning speed depends on you anyway.

Thanks for the response, and glad the program has worked for you. I agree that repetition is the best way to learn most things (‘practise makes perfect…’ and all that) but it just seemed a bit TOO repetitive; specifically the seemingly redundant task of ‘Copy the Portuguese (BR) for the English above and press Enter:’ - this isn’t requiring me to repeat anything by, say, re-writing it (which as an exercise would be beneficial). I literally copy and paste, barely even reading the sentence. This task just doesn’t seem to provide any benefit…

Many thanks.

specifically the seemingly redundant task of ‘Copy the Portuguese (BR) for the English above and press Enter:’

I reviewed my DuoLingo Portuguese course and also got the "copy"excercises, so I now know what you mean.

If you mean the “Copytyping”:
This screen appears if you make typing errors (give an incorrect answer).
It should NOT appear, if you enter the correct PT translation for the given English one.

The “copytyping” (re-typing PT) screen is there to help you so you can correct your wrong typed answer and learn how you have to type it correctly (including accents).
You shall remember your last good action, but not the previous wrong one.

There are user scripts like Cooljingle’s “Wrong answer skips” (version 0.0.6) where you can either skip the presentation/mem definition screen or skip “copytyping” (there are two boolean flags in the script source code).

If you do not like the 6 step flower planting process for quite (too) easy words, or you know that word already (but still you want to review it later with the standard repetition interval and not IGNORE it), feel free to use Cooljingle’s “Memrise Auto-Learn” user script for the web (not available on the mobile app).

You either click on the icon or press F2 hotkey (which is configurable), and after selecting one time the correct answer (or typing it), you will get the rest of the steps auto completed.

However, you might select the 1st multiple-choice and omit the one required typing planting step (because of auto-planting), which IMHO absolutely makes sense.

You have to activate the “auto-learn” for each word…there is no way (anymore) to “auto learn” a complete level or full course: You have to be the course owner or course contributor to get this additional course option (Memrise removed the auto_grow and auto_learn URL functionality for normal learners).

For Cooljingle’s “All typing” (web) user script there is a setting, if you only want to type:

  • for learning NEW words
  • for reviews (supressing multiple-choice)
  • for mistakes in reviews (standard way now is 1 multiple-choice; it was 3 multiple-choice before)

My personal option is "the standard Memrise mixed way of audio/multiple-choice/typing) for LEARNING, and typing for the rest.

The Memrise review code / API has been adjusted recently (again and over again), cutting three required additional questions (before) to one (as with “Wrong answer skips” script)…but it will NOT use typing for the incorrect given answer by itself (e.g after 3+ questions).

You you really want to get the max out of Memrise, put your mobile app by side and use the web portal with user scripts.
