Classic review from target language only

I’m almost sure that it used to be different, but a week ago I noticed that classic review (in both web and Android versions) now only shows me words in the target language so I have to pick up a translation into my language. When you learn new words, the multiple choice can be from my language into target language and vice versa but classic review only works one way now.
I haven’t checked the official Memrise courses but this is true for both user-created courses that I’m doing.

I haven’t noticed that. On the web I get a lot of typing, way, way, more than on the app.

This is the standard for the Memrise web portal since the day I signed up (October 2016) where I practice Portuguese with a user-created course by MartinPen, user-created PT BR Basic by Ben and offical PT BR 1-7 course series (including sentences) where I use Cooljingle’s “all typing” Tampermonkey user script.

This concept allows you to practice RECALLING where Duolingo fails so much as they do the switched translation direction on a higher ratio (target language to your native / second language, e.g English) to avoid learners to opt out too soon when rhey start a language from scratch.

This is / was the reason why Duolingo trains you much better in reading the target language than writing/speaking.

With the introductions of the crowns you need to test if this has improved for the higher L4/L5 levels (I could not yet).

I truly believe that the RECALLING practice (EN->target) from the first months tremendously helped me to gain knowledge in my target language.

You better don’t use the mobile app for reviews:

  • no 100% typing setting
  • button letter hints (no option to turn it off)

If I understand you right, your reviews are always from English to Portuguese, but for me it’s not, and this is what I’m talking about. I’m using two user-created courses to learn Japanese kanji, and lately reviews in them are always JP to EN, never the other way.

As for the rest of your post, I can’t say much about Duolingo since I’ve dropped it early on (it has been really ineffective for me personally), and I mostly do reviews in the app because the font and text size in web version make it hard to read. I can’t concentrate properly, and that timer in the upper right corner doesn’t help either.

You can turn the annoying timer OFF with a Tampermonkey user script!
I surely would not use the Memrise web portal if the timer is ticking.

Especially with courses which include full phrases / sentences.

Great to know that! But it still leaves the problem of overall unreadable-ness. Just to illustrate my point, here is what it looks like for me in web version

Yes, you are right.
I get EN->PT with reviews on the web, even for the one user-created course.

I have to admit that I misinterpreted your initial posting.
I was not aware that you now get JP->EN (your native language) translations in reviews.

This sounds to me that maybe the translation directions have been swapped in the course level configuration, if there is any.

Or this is related to only Asian languages?
Do you have the problem with several Asian / Japanese courses?

Sometimes changes have been made by staff which related only to a subset of languages and do not apply to others, e.g German, English, Romance languages.

As I am not a course owner or course contributor I can not really tell you if this review translation direction is customizable…I can only guess at this moment, sorry.

Hopefully other more experienced Memrise power users can join this discussion…

Maybe a new code update was recently rolled out??
Only the Memrise support and backend developers will know if this is by design or by mistake.

I am not learning Japanese on the Memrise web, so I have not seen it personally.

As you tell it, I can actually remember that there had been complains from other users about fonts and stuff for Asian languages in other threads.

Are you aware that you can zoom in and out on the web browser to e.g level 130%? Does this improve the problem?
Probably this won’t fix fonts and Kanji sizes for your particular language?
