I am having this issue as well. German, Finnish, and Japanese, no longer offer all the letters needed to complete the words. rather frustrating, especially with Japanese, who only sometimes accepts romaji as answers. I’ve been using this site specifically to practice the kanji/hiragana of the words, and knowing it in romaji is moderately pointless.
Seems to be a widespread bug today. Here´s another example (using Windows 10 and Chrome, with Spanish keyboard):
why are you not installing the respective language??? I never used the memrise onscreen keyboars or hints (they are blocked with a script) and had never a problem typing Japanese and Mandarin with the IME (look in your laptop for … “region and languages”?? or something and then add a keyboard from the list
(this does not function indeed with khmer, viet etc quite a number of unicodes are not suported by memrise)
Hi @Hydroptere,
For me, today’s bug with the in-browser keyboard is there whether I have my Spanish, English or Finnish keyboards turned on or off.
I haven’t been using a script to block the ‘hints’ but I may have to think about starting to do so.
but the in-built keyboards of Mac and windows should function anyhow, regardless if the hints are off or on (depends a bit if the creator enabled strict typing or not, preferably not)
I am having the same issue with Japanese keystroke buttons and the webversion MEMRISE. Unfortunatly here at work I don’t have access to IME and am reliant on the on screen keystrokes.
I preferred using the hints for some courses as it is really hard to switch the internal keyboard with the timer. I have 4 different language keyboards installed, my main one not being the English one. and especially with Japanese, it bugs while trying to switch between hiragana and Katakana, and memrise is not accepting the wrong script.
I also used the hints to see if it wants the answer in English (translation) kana (reading) or kanji (writing) depending on what question is asked. Always typing in romaji also only works for most of the words as ジ and other characters I can’t figure out what romaji has been assigned to them. I’ve seen working web IME’s but the memrise one is bad.
And I really don’t want to use the timer disabler to be able to work on one word for 2 minutes just to figure out in what script it wants the answer and to configure my keyboard to that script.
On the other side, why all the updates this week, I see all the new broken stuff reports. What did they try to do that broke everything?
Hi all,
Thank you for all the information. We’re currently looking into it. I’ll update this thread as soon as we have a fix.

(off -topic: if you got a good hold on kana, already … i don’t take kana levels anymore, i ignore them and go straight to kanji. saves time… anyhow, in well made courses, the memrise software does tell you things such as “you gave in kana and we asked for kanji” and you#re not penalised if you gave once kanji instead of kana and viceversa; of course, only in cases you gave the correct kana/kanji)
3 bugs in a couple weeks guys ----- and not minor…
I hope for Easter you can give us a gift and leave it unchanged
I’m using Memrise on a public computer, I don’t have any permission to install anything.
At home I am able to use Memrise this way sure, but now it is a problem since I am only at home right before I go to bed.
I’ve just started spanish (spain) 1 memrise course and noticed the online keyboard doesn’t always seem to have the correct letters - some of the needed accents are missing. I needed to write sueño with the accent on the n and it is not there in the keyboard similarly with tener razón But the accent was available for la razón. The keyboard seems to vary all the time. this is very frustrating when you want to learn the accents. these particular examples are in level 5.
I was attempting to do classic Review on course 118199 and noted that the selection of letters makes it impossible to spell aut the character shown.
Example:
The image shows the character .re
The letters I am given to spell this out are:
d q a h n e g t
-> This makes it impossible to use the review feature. I don’t know if other courses have the same problem as I am not currently doing any other courses.
(This has worked fine until today)
I am having this same problem with Classic Review of the Modern Greek site I use. It is not necessarily disastrous as I can switch my laptop keyboard to Greek, but for the time being I may have to use Speed Review more although I think I learn better with Classic Review.
For Romance languages like Spanish, French, Portuguese with accents (diacritics) but with a normal (Latin) alphabet (or how do you say it where the alphabet is like German/English) you can use the workaround of the user script “Auto correct” by Cooljingle.
You type e.g “e”, and the script changes the letter automatically to “é” depending on the correct word and correct letter.
This even works for “strict-typing” courses like https://www.memrise.com/course/359836/duolingo-brazilian-portuguese/
is it not installing anything, just going into the already built-in settings. The keyboards are there in the operating system, they just have to be activated. The admin of the library you’re using should be able to do that anytime - if you are not allowed
Thank you all for reporting this issue.
A fix has just been rolled out and you will be able to resume your review sessions shortly.
Happy learning
Beatrice
thanks for the info - the problem is fixed now
The latest version of the app has a fix in place to resolve the issue with the system keyboard not being displayed. we’re still looking into the issue with multiple words to review being added to the session.
For more updates on that issue, I’ll be updating this thread Review words still broken
We’re working hard to get you learning as efficiently as possible again, it’s just taking a bit of time.
Thank you all for your patience.
