In the phrase “gustaban demasiado los pasteles y el chocolate” when I click on “chocolate” it tells me I am wrong. There is no other choice and the correct version appears identical. It is spoiling my accuracy!
What course are yyou referring to exactly? It would be helpful if you provided a link.

If it’s the one in Level 7 of Spanish(Spain)4, I have just tried it out on my iOS app version (using review) and it worked OK for me (when doing the ‘tapping test’). Which version were you using (iOS app, Android app or PC)?
The full phrase is actually “me gustaban demasiado los pasteles y el chocolate”. The version of the tapping test I was given required all the words to be selected. Was it the same for you or did you get a test which had ‘extra’ unnecessary words in it. There are two different types of tapping test in the app version.

Native spanish speaker here! I know I´m late and you probably don´t need this response now, but just in case:
The correct sentence is “me gustaban demasiado los pasteles y el chocolate”.That initial “me” is correct and necessary. Why is this?
Unlike in english, in spanish when you say you like something, that something is actually the subject.
For example, when you say “Chocolate attracts me” (“me atrae el chocolate”) chocolate is the subject (in both languages), and you are the object. Well, that´s the case with the verb for “like” in spanish. With the spanish verb for “like”, the liked thing is the subject. So, “I like chocolate” would be “me gusta el chocolate” in spanish.
So:
“Chocolate attracts me” --> “Me atrae el chocolate”
“I like chocolate” --> “Me gusta el chocolate”
