I started doing chinese a little while ago and, although I dont know very much, I now know some chinese characters.
When I started, the font was very simple, and i became used to that. Now it has changed to being curlier (i dont know whether or not it is traditional), only on the web version, which is very frustrating as it is very hard to recognise the characters now.
I have found no easy workarounds by doing something clever with the browser, so please, help.
This isn’t much help, but maybe someone can suggest a script you can use, or maybe you can go into your browser’s preferences for displayed fonts and change it. I’ve noticed depending on my browser/device the web version displays in one of those two fonts as well.
As a side note, in my experience, getting used to both of those fonts is very useful. From what my friend explained to me who is very into caligraphy, Chinese has 5 different levels of complexity in its caligraphy. Aside from that there is also the block/type-style font used in newspapers and books. I think the one you describe as being curlier is a level 1 or 2 caligraphy. Getting a little more comfortable with both will also allow you to be a little more flexible in your reading. I was sort of the opposite, the Ben Whately courses I started off with were in a cursive font. I noticed walking around Shanghai that I could read signs on restaurants and even more ornate signs in parks, but I’d stall a lot with official notices. Now I have some dealing with both and don’t have any font-based reading problems unless i’m looking at higher levels of caligraphy, handwriting or signatures.
As Wuxian mentioned, I think it’s good to learn both. I think the font that’s used on the web version is a more “cursive” version, but it’s still Simplified Chinese, not Traditional
Anyway, if you really want the more simple characters, please let me know, as it’s possible to write a userstyle for that.
