Change course language while taking the course

As the title says; how do I change the course language to my preferred language if i have already started my course?

Example: I started the German language course in dutch. However, I want to change dutch into English so I can learn the German language through English translation, answers and vocabulary.

Hi @shazadakhtar2,

I don’t think there is a way of doing that within the course (mid-stream).

I think you will need to re-start the course after first changing your “I speak” setting in the course selection page:

Thank you for letting me know that i can change “i speak” settings. i didnt know there was such.
However, i stil am searching for a method to NOT have to restart the course and lose everything.

Just to clarify, @shazadakhtar2, you would only lose things if you ‘re-start’ in the same language setting. If you just ‘quit’ the current course (in Dutch/German), your learning will be saved, although that course will be dropped from your dashboard. If you then start the same course (but in English/German), you will have to re-learn the words/phrases you already learned in the other course - unless you ‘ignore’ those items.

@alanh
Thank you for the clarification.
I do not want to redo the words i already have done.
I hoped there might be a way to keep the course progress and change the language.

This might be a handy feature for the future.
If you know a memrise team member that might find this helpful could you tag him/her?

Thank you for your help

@shazadakhtar2,

You’ll find a list of the Forum team members under “About”, behind the button in the top right hand corner.

Good luck!

Please see this topic for future improvements.

Is there a way to change the language on my mobile (Android)? I can’t find the “I speak” box. I don’t mind if I have to restart the course, there are just too many errors in my Italian version. :frowning:

Hi @gabrieleridarelli,

If you go to the course selection list and click on the language you want to learn, you should then see an ‘or browse more courses’ option. If you click on that, the next page will have ‘courses for xxxxxxxx speakers’ where you can change the ‘xxxxxxxx’ to the language you want.

It’s explained here: https://memrise.helpshift.com/a/memrise-learn-a-new-language/?p=android&s=getting-started&f=how-do-i-search-for-a-specific-course&l=en

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks, I’ll try that!

I managed to select a different language, but for some reasons it’s not working. I get a message saying something like “You can’t see what you are looking for but the time will come, young apprentice etc. etc.”, which is wierd, because I am sure there are Japanese courses for English speakers.

Ooops, it’s working now!

Hi @gabrieleridarelli,

Sorry, I don’t know what would have triggered that message. I don’t use the app version very often (I prefer the web version) but I’ve heard of other people who have had similar messages to the one you got. Looking at my iOS app version, I can see Japanese 1, 2 and 3 for English speakers.

Anyway, it sounds like you have now got a Japanese/English course working now.

Good luck with it! :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks, you’ve been of great help!

No there isn’t.

It keeps your old progress, even if you remove the course from the dashboard, but your progress can’t be transferred to the new course.

You have to re-start from scratch.

Memrise works like DuoLingo:

Every L1-L2 course is it’s own unique course with it’s own source and target translations (if you want to call it: 3rd (auto) screen language).

The course authors have NOT added multiple source L1 columns for each possible language.

You can check the “Learn for … Polyglot” series from EasyAcademy which contains multiple L1 source translations for more than one language.

If you do not want to go through the 6 steps of planting, you can use Cooljingle’s user script “Auto-learn” for those single words, which you do not want to completely ignore.
However, the script does not support that level-/course wise.

The Memrise web portal auto_grow / auto_learn old (own) features are long gone for normal course users / learners.
To use Memrise’s own auto_learn (for levels / full course) you need to be your own course creator…or course contributor.

You could probably save your progress by using the the Memrise2Anki importer addon.
But you will be missing the new L1 English source language as note.

How many words have you learned? 2000? 5000?

I do not expect that there in an option in Anki to find L2 targets and merge two courses (decks) and multiple L1 source notes automatically for Dutch-German and English-German.

Anki is complex, can do fancy stuff, but I just stepped into reading the manual and forums the last 2-3 days.

You can try it out how L1-L2 notes to card mapping works in Anki for yourself and ask about the merging idea on the forum: http://anki.tenderapp.com/

Because of a SSL certificate verify error I was not successfully able to start the Memrise2Anki import for myself on my system.

Again: if you have not already finished learning
~3000-5000 words, all the investiment is not IMHO worth it.

I would NOT do it for the smaller offical Memrise 1-7 courses!
