Certain Czech words being "censored"

I know many online sites are replacing words they consider offensive with “boss”, but “jiného” is not a swear word, honestly. Okay, it’s got “ho” at the end but there’s no need to change it to “jinéboss”. Everytime I change the word back to what it should be, it’s altered again. Could get tedious.

Have any other Czech learners noticed this on courses they’re studying?

I haven’t, but will keep an eye out - is it just the ‘ho’ that’s reacting for you, or other things too?
Also, you haven’t set up any such rule on your own browser in some way, there are apps/settings which do this (a friend is replacing the word Trump with, er, something else on everything his browser displays)?

I don’t know about Czech, but I can assure you it isn’t happening in French. There are a handful courses dedicated to swearing and some courses with offensive language levels. You would think if Memrise was doing it, entire French courses wouldn’t be overlooked.

Hi FishSlap. Thanks for the info about French. I knew there were “swearing” courses in other languages and did wonder if they were affected. As you say, if Memrise was doing it, it wouldn’t just happen to Czech. It’s a puzzle.

Thanks for replying.

Hi mthierst. I’ve only noticed it in words ending in “ho”. No, I haven’t set anything in my browser. Unlike your friend, I didn’t even know that was possible. I think you’re on to something though and it is the browser doing it. I will see if I can fiddle around with its settings.

Good luck with your Czech. Glad you are in it for the long haul. It is good to see “old” familiar names on the site. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for replying.

Heh, we must count as Dinosaurs from a Memrise perspective I reckon!

I just ran a page in my Declension course that goes through the forms for mladý (https://www.memrise.com/course/538105/deklinace/20/), and didn’t get any effects. In which course/level do you see these? If you send me the link I can try and see what my laptop does, this would help to determine if the effect happens at Memrise (in that case it should happen for both of us) or locally. Or you could try the forms linked above, too?

Hi mthierst. I checked out your link and was presented with “mladéboss” all over the place.

The page in my course where it happens is

https://www.memrise.com/course/200675/no-typing-czech-phrases-audio/3/?action=prev

No, doesn’t happen to me on that one either, it’s definitely something at your end. does it only happen in Memrise, or also on other websites?
https://cs.wiktionary.org/wiki/jiný

(and I see you’ve added words to the course since I’ve worked my way through it. Better go back and pick those up… :upside_down_face:)

Hi mthierst. The wiki page was fine, so yes, it’s definately my problem! It happens when I enter “ho” words on Google Translate and it’s even happening as I’m typing “ho” in this message. I can live with it. What concerned me was that learners of my course might see “boss” also, but they won’t, so that’s fine.

Thanks very much for your input and help, I appreciate it.
