Can we please get Mems back?

Agree. They were such a great help. It’s like half of efficiency was cut off :sob:

I don’t understand how it’s a good business move to piss off and ignore your customers wishes and change the key ingredient that made memrise special, especially when the replacement is not ready and just something vague in the future

same here, shocked that they are removed. It was great feature!

Wasn’t aware they’re removed. I subbed for a month, intended to go lifetime sub later, but I likely won’t.

Same here, I probably wouldn’t have subbed for lifetime If I knew this was comming. It feels that memrise ir loosing good features rather than getting better

Came on to type the exact same thing, also subbed for lifetime and disappointed…

I am severely disappointed. I’ve been using Memrise since 2012, and I come back every now and then to review or learn a new language.

But I will have to accept the decision. Even though Memrise should have communicated a bit better with its supporters. Positive feedback for Memrise next time!

A question to everyone: where is the best place to learn visually after Memrise?
I want to learn the Thai language (and update my geography).

As someone mentioned above, mems were not just any other thing, they were the foundation upon which this app was created. Right now, your app is not different from others, nothing special anymore. I bought my subscription just because of mems and if they’re not brought back I’ll be gone (very likely not alone). thank you.

I’m also mourning the removal of mems. The experience is far less engaging and useful than it used to be. I enjoy learning Chinese characters and also general knowledge topics like countries and capitals, and in both of these areas, mems were invaluable. It feels like the beating heart of the website has been ripped out.

Does anyone know of any other apps or websites (websites preferred) that work in a similar way to the way Memrise used to - i.e. by suggesting some kind of mnemonic or allowing the creation of such?

For Kanji, there are a number of options, like Anki (I hate it) or Wanikani (paid subscription model) or Kanji koohii (via RTK). They all suck in their own way. Old Memrise was just right, why did they have to remove the one core feature? Even if I didn’t “use mems” (ie not created them), I always went through existing ones when I failed a problematic item repeatedly and needed a better way to memorise them.

This new Memrise is such a lobotomised carcass now, compared to what it used to be. Probably in the name of profit, to make the subscription more attractive. Way to drive out your user base.

I know, it’s not exactly what most people are talking about here, but it’s something

I was hoping for scripts that restore the mem functionality, but the few that exist for various functions (like a “review due” indicator) seem to also be outdated.

Well, it’s only a proof of concept, but I also made it work in a chrome browser:

It’s actually quite symptomatic that the above thread, which pertains to the removal of Mems, has been closed by Memrise recently. Probably an easy way to quieten the constant flow of complaints and critical postings …

Meanwhile, nothing (I mean absolutely nothing) has been done to remedy bugs, except for those where the system was compromised far enough to render it useless. Why? Simply due to the fact that Memrise doesn’t even care to test their upcoming system in a sandbox but rather does so on the productive platform, that is, right where paying customers are being affected.

This is not only sad, it’s ridiculous and absoluteley unprofessional. I wish there was a different platform (I’m afraid I dislike Anki very much) that would allow me to continue all the courses I have been working on for years …

Memrise: too busy to fix bugs or answer direct questions about their own documented lies and broken promises, never too busy to call their own customers names, treat them like they’re stupid, and essentially tell them to shut up.
