Can I delay the "time outs"

Hello,

sometimes when there are a high number of answers I “time out” before I make my selection. This is because I like to review all the options to identify how many of them I currently understand.

Can this “time out” function be delayed?

Alternatively, can the progression to the next question be changed to manual rather than automatic so that I can review all the options after I make my selection?

cheers.

You should install the user script "Memrise Timer disabler for the Memrise website.

Thanks for your response!

Excuse my ignorance but how do I install a user script?

Please answer as if you are talking to a 55 year old…because you are :smirk:

Thanks

To install a .JS user script (which auto installs quite easy) you first have to install the right browser plugin / add-on.

Do be aware that Memrise doesn’t support scripts like that, so the script might stop working whenever Memrise releases an update. So unless you are comfortable not only with installing the script, but also with finding it and un-installing it later on, I recommend sticking to actual Memrise features.

My recommendation would be to find a different course, one where you can usually answer within Memrise’s time limit.

Also, installing “Chrome extensions” means that you might be downloading crap that will break Chrome’s security protections. Maybe it’ll be fine, but as a general rule it’s a good idea to try and avoid downloading and installing random odds-and-ends.

Thanks Lurajane,

Unfortunately having just moved to Portugal the Portuguese course is a necessity. I would like to ensure that I get the most out of it.

Cheers.

Thanks for the suggestion.

This is true.

Think about this: How long is the timer script, thankfully, already working?

Even the last update broke some other user scripts for the worse (e.g “Memrise Catch Up Review” by Cooljingle), the crappy timer can still be, thankfully, disabled…

even if you do language category filter grouped reviews (across all lists courses, e.g Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal).

However, normally I just do reviews course by course, not the global language filter (grouped) reviews as no details are displayed from what course the mixed single displayed words/phrases/sentences are pulled from.

Please note:
For the latter to be able to (blue) review the backlog from ALL language courses and the “timer disabler” script, you have to add a 2nd match tag
"// @match https://www.memrise.com/garden/review/*"
in the header of the timer user script; after that even this will be working fine.

I recommend sticking to actual Memrise features.

Talking about the offical Memrise PT1-7 courses this would mean:

  • too many multiple-choice questions instead of typing (for the best into the L2 target language)
  • sentences with >15 characters will be forced to multiple-choice exercises
  • offical Memrise courses are not meant for typing-only
  • the timer ticks (therefore it makes no sense to try to type longer phrases/sentences)

So what are the “actual Memrise features” you are talking about?

My recommendation would be to find a different course, one where you can usually answer within Memrise’s time limit.

This means searching for user-created vocabulary-only courses (no phrases/sentence teaching) and dropping Memrise offical PT1-7 courses. How sad is that recommendation?

It is IMHO-counter-productive if the timer ticks and you have to read through 4, 6 or even 8 multiple-choice options with full sentences.

You will train your brain NOT to think in the correct language, but simply to eliminate the other wrong choices and find the true option by only scanning for 2-3 word keywords…you may not even try to translate / understand the full sentence(s)!

Don’t tell me that you would be trying to fully understand the 4-8 multiple choice options with a ticking timer

I have to admit it:
I even do NOT do this on the DuoLingo web portal (with no timer).
Multiple-choice is just too boring and easy and I try to go with the next question as soon as possible (the other 3-4 options are quite wrong the most of the time anyways; it is not a difficult thing to go with the right option).

IMHO the only way to really work with the Memrise offical PT courses and “Portuguese Basic” (I am using the BR variant) is:

  • to install the “Timer disabler” script

  • install Cooljingle’s “Auto-correct” and “All-typing” or “Memrise turbo” user scripts (I do not use the last turbo script)

  • set the “all typing setting” option “Include typing disabled”

  • living with the fact that (many) valid sentences alternatives will be missing (therefore your valid alternative answer will be marked wrong too often)
-> DuoLingo is better in accepting and reporting multiple alternative sentence solutions!!!

  • collecting the errors and trying to report them in the forum course thread (however I expect that no alternatives will be added, as Memrise staff expects no free typing but simply selecting the only single valid option from multiple-choice options too easily which they have taught previously)

  • or the worst alternative: To fully rely on crappy multiple-choice learning, active timer and no typing for sentences with >15 characters

I am convinced:
If DuoLingo would add a timer to their normal web portal translations (just like the crappy timer in their “timed practice” with lagging pages and audio), everyone would stop using their web portal!!!

Memrise should work on those “real feature” (web only) issues, not on design remakes or Ziggy level things.

I am expecting that Memrise will follow DuoLingo’s worst Android app tapping excercise type in the future, that a longer sentence with 11/12 words:

  • a) already shows the full answer and you just have to click NEXT/Continue button (how stupid is that? I am not a kid!)
  • b) the beginning with the first 4-5 block words is already shown and you just have to complete the rest of the remaining (valid) words by tapping
