Bots / Scripters in Dutch II and IV

Hi Memrise admins,

Two scripters / bots appeared in the official Dutch courses the past two weeks
https://www.memrise.com/user/PaulGrancele7/
https://www.memrise.com/user/gullfoss/
and are generating ~ 1-3M points / day. On one hand, hats off to them for breaking the system. At the same time, it is a bit frustrating that rankings do not actually reflect people’s efforts to learn a new language. (Fun competition is less fun when someone cheats.)

Perhaps banning the users may be a bit much, but it is possible to reset their scores in the rankings to zero?

cheers

I’ll tag @MemriseSupport for you, they might have to look at those users’ profiles. FWIW, they don’t seem to be bots to me - you might have to consider the fact that there’s people who simply spent a tremendous amount of time learning …

Hi @Olaf.Rabbachin,

Sure, I agree, they seem more like people than bots. :robot: Though are you really suggesting that earning 2M points in one day, in a single course is possible?  How about 3-5M across four or five courses? How would you personally go about doing that? :cowboy_hat_face:

I see your point - this really does look odd and next to unfeasible. But never say never!
Looking at the courses these guys are learning, I don’t see any cheating course (those show up every now and then). I wouldn’t put all too much thought into this though - you don’t have to be at the top of any leader-board, and if others cheat to get there, who cares!

I know about these expert scripters. They are hacking the Memrise Points Database for that course then saving that using extreme scripts. I do not understand how they do it but they must be banned.

Hi,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

We’ll investigate and take appropriate actions if necessary. Unfortunately we won’t be able to disclose the outcome of our decision.

Please reach out to us if there’s anything else

Best wishes,
Memrise team.

Hi there,

Just to let you know that I am not a bot, just tried to compete against gullfoss a few weeks ago. I remember it was hard

Just working hard several hours a day on my dutch (almost exclusively on Dutch). More than happy if you want @thebravelittlemuon to explain more in details how I am doing it if you are interested.

And thanks @MemriseSupport for not reseting my score to zero. I saw that you did for the other profile but thankfully you saw that I was just a human being haha. Have been here since many years now, not always active but coming back from time to time.

Cheers

Hi @PaulGrancele7,

Actually, yes, I am curious, how do you rack up just shy of ~1M points in 2-3 days across 3 different Dutch levels without cheating? It is Thursday morning now and a quick glance shows you with 50k in Dutch II, 125k in Dutch III, 700k in Dutch IV.

Hi,

I am learning on a web browser (I prefer and it is faster than on a phone) doing reviewing sessions of 100 hundred words. It takes me around 5min to complete a session. Once a word has been reviewed multiple times correctly it is worth 150 points, if you do a mistake on a specific word then the next time it will be worth only 54, then 60someting, 78, 96, 112, 134 and finally 150pts again. So if you do very few mistakes, most of the words will bring you 150 points.

So 100 words multiply by 150 equals 15000 + 2000 points for 100% accuracy + some few extra points depending on how fast the session was complete.

I usually try to plan a one hour session or at least half an hour. So if in 5min I can do around 17000pts, in 30min I am around 100k and 200k for one hour.

I am this morning at 907k, so around 5 hours of work in three days. Nothing out of the extraordinary according to me.

hahaha, nice!

Did I get it right: you are doing speed reviews with 100 words? I’m just asking because they had removed this option from the app some time ago. Is it available in the web?

Yes, the web has 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 to choose from. It doesn’t distinguish between review and speed review though.
