App not working on Samsung Galaxy S5

I have the latest version of the Memrise app and it is unable to be used on the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Whenever I try to start a learning session, the app will crash. I’ve tried uninstalling the app, and performed a factory reset on the phone, but the app continues to crash every time.

I’m thinking this may be a bug with the app or an incompatibility issue, as it works fine on all other android devices I’ve tested.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

I’m running the Memrise version 2.9_3842 on a Galaxy S5 mini and it’s working ok. Maybe try clearing the data, then cache, then uninstall / re-install and see if that totally resets the app?

@makalu Factory reset deletes everything besides system. So it won’t help.

I figured that but for some reason, Memrise has been finicky for me in the way it installs / fails on Android.

I had the same problem as described here on a Nexus 7 recently and it took 2 or 3 sequences of full system reset / clear data then cache uninstall / re-install to get Memrise to come back and play nicely.

As Matt said, it may also be some incompatibility issue so it would be interesting to know if Memrise was the first and only thing installed after the factory reset to reduce the number of troubleshooting variables.

ETA: It will also depend on how he restored the data after the factory reset (restore from a backup versus individual app reload).

I’ve tried a factory reset a few times. One time I wiped it completely clean and downloaded only Memrise, but it still continued to crash.

Cleared cache, tried force stopping the app and everything.

Memrise works fine on other devices no problems. All other apps work fine on this phone too. This one is a bit of a mystery.

Same here and it’s so frustrating. Using Android 4.4.2 on a Galaxy Note II and Memrise is basically unusable since the rocketship update. It crashes frequently, won’t load at all half the time, is incredibly slow the rest of the time, and won’t retain progress between uses (which is beyond frustrating). Have done force stops and data/cache clearances and total deletion and reinstallation and nothing makes any difference.

Saying ‘same here’ may not be furthering the conversation, but when you’re browsing the forums in despair and considering giving up on the app completely, it’s sometimes nice to know you’re not alone

Some memrise staff suggested that I quit some of my large courses as it looked like a memory crash. I tried quitting most of my larger courses but it still didn’t fix the issue. However I then tried logging out and starting a new profile with a single course, and it began to work fine. When I logged back into my profile, the app would go back to crashing immediately when opened. I tried the same thing on another Galaxy s5 and got the same results.

The app works fine with my profile on other devices with the same specs or lower, so it could be an issue with how galaxy devices handle their memory. (I’m no expert though.)

That said, I never had any if these issues before the rocket ship update. It seems like all the graphics are too system intensive, which is a shame because it used to run really well.

Hopefully this can get fixed in an upcoming update, but until then, I’m stuck carrying around a spare phone just to use Memrise.

Yeah, quitting your courses - i.e. not using the app in a way it was supposedly designed to be used - shouldn’t be a bug fix. I’m also one of the Samsung users who get a crash every time I try to open the app. I can still use the app if I can just get past the main screen with the planets and the alien ship getting stuck midway through the animation. Luckily, I had the daily reminder activated when the latest update came. I can access the latest course I’ve visited through those, but I would very much like to use the app how it is supposed to be used.

This has now been fixed in a recent update.

  • The first step is to restart your Samsung S5 (Power off, then back on again)

  • If the issue is with only one application such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter:
Go to Settings > Applications > Application manager

  • Scroll to the right until you get to the All tab and select the App that you are having issues with

  • Tap on Clear Data and Clear Cache

  • Restart your smartphone and test

  • If the above steps did not work, try uninstalling the app, and downloading it once more through the Google Play Store

  • Make sure your device software is up to date by going into your Settings > About > Software Update
Check Samsung Galaxy S5 Manual for more support.

I had already uninstalled the app, and also factory reset the phone multiple times.

The developers got back to me and advised that it was a memory issue with the app, causing it to crash on devices with lower specs. It was fixed in an update about a month later. Issue now resolved.
