[App Feedback] Disable letter buttons in mobile app

Hello everyone. I hope this is the right place to post.

I have been using Memrise for a great deal of time now, both online and in app to learn Korean, using both official and my own courses, and I am very happy with it.

However, as I began using the (android) mobile app more often, I began to realize its only payoff is passive knowledge reinforcement. With the letters of the words visible to you at all times, you merely look at the couple of letters and it is not difficult to come up with the only possible word it contains. As such, studying is very fast and easy. However, every time I switch back to website now, I notice I am barely able to put together a word without the letters visible. This was not the case before when I was depending on the website only.

I am sure many other people have been having the same experience, whether they are aware of the effects or not. Would it be possible to add this option to the mobile app? As I noticed there is a similar option already (disabling button tests), but no option to hide the letters for shorter words.

As it is, the mobile app is very nice, but I would rather use the website to spend my learning time more effectively. And with the mobile app influencing what the program perceives as words you mastered, it is a bit difficult to combine the two.

Anyone else having similar thoughts?

Disclaimer: I don’t have an Andriod device, and I almost never use the iOS app…

However, with the iOS app, there is a way to replace the over-simplistic Memrise keyboard with a normal one.

Click the little keyboard icon…

And voilà! A real keyboard!

Perhaps the Andriod app has something similar??

Hello Kaspian,

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately, while this feature is present in the Android app, it only brings up the normal keyboard up over the memrise one. As such, the memrise one is still (at least partly) visible.

Perhaps a bug then? I am using original Samsung keyboard, Android 6.0.1, Galaxy A3 2017. But I’ve had the same issue on another Samsung phone and my Nexus.

At any rate I am happy to see this is probably not an intended feature, and I guess I’ll be reposting this as a bug.

Hello,

@11157 I find the letter prompting really annoying too. It makes it too easy and does not allow a proper learning since we make less mistakes and the words will not come back as often as they should.

I’ve even tried to disable tapping tests on the courses I created and on the android app and it still shows the letter.

@kaspian Even when we select the keyboard on the top, it does not make prompt letters disappear. It’s weird that it seems to work on IOS but not on Android.

Maybe one of the admins could help answering our question @BeaTrisy or @Joshua ?

They actually removed this feature in the latest iOS update! I’m furious that they made this poor-informed decision.

meaning: removed the letter-buttons? Or removed the keyboard on top?
