Android: color changes

Good morning,

when doing my morning session today, I noticed that the colors seem to have been changed for dark mode on Android.

I don’t know whether it’s just that there seems to be no quality assurance or whether it’s like some “hey you over in the corner - have nothing to do? Go and change some colors in the app!”.
I don’t even see any reason as to why the colors had to be changed in the first place? Most notably, the progress bar during review sessions is so barely noticeable, I thought it was gone at first. (Which proves the point that this either wasn’t on purpose or someone didn’t know what (s)he was doing.)

Also, the tapping tests (jumbled words) are now white on bright blue most of the time (sometimes they’re black on purple if I’m not mistaken - never noticed any pattern reg. when the color changed during a session, maybe some sort of XP bonus), i. e. next to no contrast…
OTOH, typing is now white on black which gives your eyes a burn.

@MemriseSupport, @JBorrego: any pointers as to what made you randomly change colors? Isn’t it that there’s a ton of other things to fix (things that really need fixing!)? Why do you always have to change (BREAK!) things that are working perfectly well!?

I can live with it, but Olaf is right.

There’s so much room for improvement and new ideas, it’s astonishing you are keeping on changing colours.

Hi @Olaf.Rabbachin,

The changes to dark mode colours have been made purposely so as it to be in line with what users on iOS see. We are working towards a consistent experience across all platforms and colours/branding is just one of the ways we are doing this. We think this is a pretty positive thing!

That said, you’re right that some colours don’t look quite right: the Learn progress bar is indeed too dark and the contrast is off in tapping tests. A bug ticket has been created (internal code MA-7796) to get this sorted. For reference, this is what it looks like on iOS:

We hope this adds some clarity.

Kind regards,
Memrise team
