Android bugs

Olaf mentioned it somewhere.

@ale_c @MemriseSupport

It looks like screens/flashcards in classic review mode now moving much faster than before. Is it me or you really changed the way they replace each other?

@Olaf.Rabbachin

Olaf, did you notice it?

No, but that doesnā€™t mean a thing - I rarely do a classic review these days, usually Iā€™ll do speed reviews only.

Hi, Iā€™m not sure I understand the problem. Do you have any videos/screenshots or could you please describe what the expected behaviour and actual behaviour are?

Thanks,
A.

Start a review session. Look how screens/flashcards are changing when you are moving after correct answer from one item to the next word or phrase. Itā€™s my impression they are changing faster than before, too jumpy, itā€™s not a comfortable speed. Iā€™ve installed earlier app version, because of this.

Nice catch @Hombre_sin_nombre :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: it is indeed 100ms faster due to a change in the code we use for animations. This is unintended so our team will fix this in next weekā€™s release :+1:

For future reference, could you please create a new thread for this kind of feedback? Iā€™d like to keep this thread as clean as possible and laser-focused on the issues listed above.

Btw, our QA team have started checking the bugs in that list and have created tickets for our developers so they can be prioritised.

Best,
A.

Hey, did you issue a fix for a speed bug?

A thread for every little bug? I thought itā€™s more convenient to keep them in one place.

Yes, this should have been fixed in the latest release. Are you still experiencing this?

Having separate threads allows us to monitor reports more easily and keep everything tidy. So yes, please post new bugs in new threads :slightly_smiling_face:

A.

I donā€™t recall where I posted this (and I do think that @MemriseSupport confirmed it), but since this bug is still present, I now added #30 (audio not being played during learning sessions when presenting a new word in community courses). This is a very nasty one, Iā€™d sure like to see it fixed soon ā€¦

Hi @Olaf.Rabbachin, Iā€™ve checked through our bugs and canā€™t seem to find this one recorded. To confirm, when doing a Learn New Words session on a community-created course (with audio), no audio is played? Or does this happen in other session types too?

Yes, exactly. This only happens when the word is being shown for the first time. You can also manually play the audio by tapping the button then though. Starting with the second appearance of a word the audio will play at the beginning, just as expected.

@Olaf.Rabbachin thanks! Our QA team has informed me that there is an open bug ticket for this that will be worked on shortly. We should have a better idea on a timeframe next week :slightly_smiling_face:

Iā€™d noticed that but just accepted it as an oversight.

After installing the latest update the app is crashing at the start of review and classic review sessions. I guess some time ago someone in another thread has reported this bug, too.

Hi, sorry about this! We had a similar issue on Speed Review whose is being rolled out as we speak. Can you update the app when possible and let me know if the issue persists in the next few days?

If so, please also confirm again which device model and OS youā€™re using (I know youā€™ve specified this for me in the past, however I canā€™t save messages on this platform so Iā€™ve lost this info unfortunately :man_facepalming:)

Best,
A.

This might not be related to the issue that @Hombre_sin_nombre reported, but last week I bought a new tablet (Lenovo Yoga Smart Tab 10.1", 1920*1200px, Android 10) which replaces my old Huawei Tab (Android 6).
Due to the now latest Android release I now have the ā€œnewā€ Speed Review that seems to apply to official Memrise courses.
Apart from the fact that the layout has changed (faded background upon starting; no means to ignore or flag a word as ā€œdifficultā€), I noticed that the countdown has changed: while I have some 6s for community courses, I only have some 4s for Memrise courses - thatā€™s way too short when it comes to phrases. Also, the so very much distracting ā€œfade-out-effectā€ (I already reported this quite a while ago) is still there.

Another thing I noticed over the last few days is the fact that I now have to sometimes (!) close the app again when switching between courses. This seems to be triggered when I attempt to start a new session too quickly, i. e. before the levels overview has completely loaded. When this happens, the app will show the last selected course, but all sessions will be applied to the formerly selected one. Tapping the three-dots-button will also show the figures for the formerly selected course. Switching to a different course and then switching back wonā€™t help; instead youā€™ll always have to close and restart the app to continue with the last selected course. I thought this problem was more or less fixed (see #7 on my list) as it rarely occurred over at least the last 6mo, but it now resurfaced.

Last but not least, two new (strange) problems appeared (only a few times!):

  1. In this course, the app only showed the ā€œLearn new wordsā€ button, the three-dots-button didnā€™t show. I have completed the course though (although recently, some new words were added and then learned by me, maybe thatā€™s why). Upon starting a learning session the app seems to show the waiting screen indefinitely. After stopping (after a few minutes), the three-dots-button reappeared.

  2. I have a sequence of courses that I work through daily. When switching from one course to another, the app picked a course which I had already worked through (5 or so courses down the line); this happened at least three times over the last week.

Bad news. :frowning: I wish Memrise would stop such developing, which in fact is downgrading.

@ale_c Have not seen this update available for my device, but if you have new speed review in it Iā€™d rather avoid to install it. During speed review Iā€™m marking my difficult words, so you just killing a useful feature. Itā€™s so tiresome that you are not only not bringing anything good, but destroying things which were actually useful.

Further to the above: this happened again today, on a different course. Funnily, after tapping on ā€œLearn new wordsā€ it took me to a course way down my list (Russian 5, 18 courses down) and started a learning session there. After cancelling the session, that course didnā€™t get selected though. :unamused:

I was forced into an update to the latest version of the Android app (donā€™t ask); and found it unusable. I had a long rant written up about all the shortfalls and ā€˜improvementsā€™ it presented, but then realised that this wonā€™t help anyone, and that memrise is unlikely to to care about my opinions, as usual.

So, instead I went and dug out a repository of old versions, and am working my way through those, trying the find the sweet spot in-between the download issues, the unhelpful keyboard behaviour, and the newer changes to the course list.
One phone is now on 2.94_9930, which is the first version which downloads all my large courses.
The other one is on 2.94_13360, which already shows some issues with the on-screen keyboard

Anybody here with an opinion where the sweet spot is in terms of functionality/buggyness?
