Android bugs

Yeah, I forgot about it, because usually I don’t use it. At the moment I don’t see this navigation button anymore.

Also, yesterday I’ve firstly cleared cache and other data in the app and then reinstalled it completely. My previous bugs (‘too much time to load a course page’ and ‘lags during sessions’) are gone, but now after logging in I saw this start page loading bug you were talking about. I don’t know how it works, but I’ve managed to log in after all.

How do you clear the cache? I’ve never seen any option to do that, I just uninstall.

@JBorrego: another thing to note is that the course list (resp. its order) is no longer synchronized across devices, i. e. between my tablet and my mobile phone.

Tap on any app - app info/something like properties - storage - clear data (login data contains here) or clear cache (temporary data is here).

Or via settings - apps - chose your app - storage - clear data or clear cache.

Ah, I’ve never thought of that, cheers!

@MemriseSupport, @JBorrego: I completely forgot to tell you guys that, as @Hombre_sin_nombre suggested (2 posts further up), clearing the cache actually worked. Ever since I did that, the figures across all courses are back and I am again able to work on the course that used to crash the app.

BTW: is there any chance that the links between official Memrise courses can be brought back soon?

@jborrego

It looks like you have a critical bug in the latest update:

  1. reviewed items are not marked as reviewed
  2. consequently, you can’t score any points

Reinstallation did not help at all.

Hi @Hombre_sin_nombre, sorry to hear you’re experiencing this.

Unfortunately we’re unable to reproduce this on our side.

Can you please send us a bit more details about this? e.g. which device and OS you’re using, which course(s) this occurs with. If you have any screenshots/videos of the problem, please send them over as this will help us investigate further.

Thanks,
A.

I’ve sent you a PM.

Hi Jesus @JBorrego,

Please could you also arrange for the restoration of the automatic ‘ignore’ feature - it’s normally listed as a drop down feature under ‘options’ on the home page of each Memrise course.

The feature allows the user to ‘ignore out’ items that he/she has previously learned on other Memrise courses and is extremely useful.

It has disappeared - presumably inadvertently during a system update.

Thank you in advance for looking into this. Regards, - Ian.

Never saw this feature. When it disappeared?

Hi, I noticed it was gone about two or three years ago - I don’t know what happened, and I’m guessing it was removed by accident.

I’m making some courses right now that have some overlap, so some users would likely benefit from having the feature re-activated.

There’s a feature in official courses only - if an item is duplicated in these 7 courses, it will be automatically marked as learned in the latter course. Is it a different feature?

Hi, @Hombre_sin_nombre cc @JBorrego, @ale_c no that’s not that feature I’m talking about.

The thing I’m talking about it is the user-selected “ignore” function that applies to a specific course and, when user selected, automatically ignores out all duplicates of previously learned items from other courses.

The ignored items are automatically turned very light grey, visible when viewing the top page for each level (and looking the same as if the user had manually gone through each level to manually ignore out selected items).

The switch for this feature has disappeared from course home pages - see example snapshot below:

Hi,

I’ve joined Memrise three years ago and can’t remember ever seeing this feature. We do have the option to ignore items within each level though as I’m sure you’re aware

If the feature you’re referring to disappeared 3+ years ago and was never reintroduced, it would sound like it was removed for a specific reason.

Sorry if I can’t go into further details about this.

Best,
A.

Hi Alessio @ale_c, please could you consider reintroducing the feature?

I think it would be particularly useful for users working through a current official course who have previously learned a major portion of that official course vocabulary by completing discontinued official courses and/or community courses.

I suspect that removing the feature was accidental, and could easily be added back?

Hi @ian_mn,

Is it this?

If it is, the links in the posts by johnastsang and Arete_Hime (both May 2016) lead you to the history.

Hi @alan,

Thanks, I’m pretty sure that auto-ignore is the correct name for what I’m referring to.

If I remember correctly, the feature suddenly disappeared around a time when Memrise’s major technical focus was the introduction of the space-alien theme, which has since been discontinued.

It would be great if auto-ignore could be re-activated (but not the space alien theme). Re-activation could be commercially advantageous to Memrise, as more people would probably be inclined to purchase Pro membership because of the improved functionality.

It disappeared before I’ve joined Memrise. Though I agree with you - this feature is very useful - I doubt they’ll bring it back. It takes a lot of resources to parse courses and, most of all, community courses and community features are not their priority.

Hi all,

I did some digging and was able to find more information on this topic. It looks like this feature was removed because it used a lot of resources for us to continue supporting it, considering that only a few learners actively used it. As @alanh advised, you can read more in the forum archives above.

Sadly, there are no plans to reintroduce it as of now. :frowning:

Best,
A.

Hi Alessio @ale_c

I remember the feature operating perfectly and being completely stable, so I can’t imagine it taking much (if any) ongoing maintenance effort from Memrise developers. So its sudden removal still doesn’t make any obvious sense to me.

Thank you for investigating this and replying to my query. Memrise’s response to user questions has improved a lot since you’ve got involved in these discussion boards, which is much appreciated.
