All of my Mems got DELETED!

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if there’s ANYone that can help me right now. I need to contact an administrator or technician about this issue, if possible, but it has really made me mad about what the heck just happened and about how they’ve been treating me here on Memrise recently. Basically, what happened is that just a few days ago, I realized from a Kanji course on Memrise (James Heisig - Remembering the Kanji 1) after reviewing over some kanji that I didn’t find a SINGLE mem that I had made in the past from the course. At first, I thought that it was just a bug in the mobile version on my phone but then I went to my laptop and the situation was far WORSE than I had anticipated: not only did I realize that my mems for the course got deleted completely (I saw it from my profile), all of the mems I made from all of my course combined were completely DELETED (over 2000 mems or so)! Do you know how much I made us of them and now I can’t remember them when I most need them? I believe that this may have been a bug in the Memrise system but I’m still really mad at this. I’ve heard a few similar problems from some other community users recently but nothing as extreme as this! If someone is able to help me, please do so ASAP because I can’t afford to have lost all of the mems I created. If not, I’ll be completely disappointed and will have to switch sites for using mnemonics completely.

Thank you for reading this.

This has happened to a few people. So sad, I can really understand that you must be devastated and furious at the same time.

I hope they can be found again.

Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately it sounds like your Mems have been deleted. I suspect this happened because your account was flagged by us as being compromised.

Unfortunately some people have been using Mems to spread spam and sexual content within Memrise. You can read more about this here: Bogus follower / spam / sexual language

It sounds like your account was taken over by one of these spammers and used in this manner. It’s likely you may have used the same password for Memrise as you did for other web services, which allowed them to gain access.

To confirm:

  • Memrise has not been hacked.
  • It’s likely another website (which was hacked) had the same password / email combination, and this login combination was released to the public.

You should have received an email from Memrise informing you of this, and advising we have locked your account and taken measures to prevent the spread malicious Mems, such as erasing them. Apologies if you did not receive this email (please check spam box). Unfortunately we would not be able to retrieve the Mems in question.

Please make sure you reset your password and choose a unique one. And if you use the same password / email combo for other websites, we would advise resetting them as well.

I hope this clarifies the situation.

Memrise.

Here is another user who had the same problem:

@Maevskiy: here is the thread explaining what must have happened.

@MemriseMatty: while hacked accounts and spam-mems are a serious issue, it sure is quite a major loss for the mems’ creators (and other learners as well!) if you go ahead and simply delete ALL mems that have been created by such a user resp. stored in their account.
Presuming that you have mechanisms to detect that an account has been compromised and that you will then do some manual research - couldn’t you go ahead and delete all mems that were created after a certain date (i. e. the first spam entry plus all younger ones)?

I also do have a feeling that something else might be wrong - there are numerous threads about lost mems presently. It would be sad if users had to find out that this doesn’t just concern hacked/compromised accounts!

I use my facebook account with two-step authentication to log in to Memrise. And I lost all new mems again after changing all passwords. So the problem is most likely with the false alarms of the security system on the side of Memrise.

Well, to remove all the mems that people created over the years, forgive me, idiocy!
