Adding a "hint" to a word

Is there any way to add a hint (for example the first letter of a word) in memrise? I have this problem because I have repeating words in two different courses. For example in both I have “to employ” and in the first on it should be translated as “contratar” and in the second one is should be “emplear” - sometimes I’m stuck with the infinity repeating 5 - 10 words because I mix both courses.

I tried memrise change word definition, but it doesn’t work for me. Any hints?

what course are you talking about?

It won’t tell you anything because those are two Polish-Spanish courses. But it probably can occur with any two or more courses from different creators.

It tells me much. You need to link that course with this forum and tag the
creator as well so the author or the contributors of this course can fix it

You’d need to contact the course creator and ask him to add some sort of hint, as users don’t have the power to do these sorts of things.

@wiertarkazudarem you may not know that most courses here on memrise are user-created not official ones made by memrise staff

I guess so. I hoped that someone had the same problem with that (as I wrote before there is a user script for changing’ definition just in your browser). Anyway, I will try to somehow contact the course creator (it’s sometimes really hard). Thank you for your answer

Yes I do know that but it doesn’t change a thing because I can contact with a creator everytime I take a new course to ask for adding hint, right? As I see some people had the same problem so they made user script

but it doesn’t work for me, it’s probably outdated.

If you do not provide a link to that course, there is nothing really we can do to help you

It wouldn’t help if I would provide this link. This topic was totally about something else, changing anything in these courses is not the point of this topic. That’s why I posted the link to the user script.

I agree.
This is a feature, the Memrise web portal is currently missing for the learner.
I can agree again that there is no need to add dedicated course links, as it may affect ALL available Memrise course.

@Memrise: Can’t there be a special end-user learner/hint database, which adds those words and links to the courses you are taking without affecting the course owner?

It would be okay for me if I had to click on a link button (e.g hotkey) if I really can not imagine the translation word to the question.

It also happens to me for some Portuguese courses, that the (x) hint is missing behind the word.
For some words, the hint is provided by the course owner, for most not.

The problem as you have already experienced relies in the fact that each course e.g DuoLingo-PT, PT1, PT2, PT3, PT Basic teaches DIFFERENT words (synonyms).
Most (PT) courses and questions lack the acceptence of multiple synonyms.
So you would have to know which course accepts which word translations, when you do the word review and type the word into.

Actually I do reviews course by course, NOT globally by language as this would inter-mix the asked word translations even more (another problem: global language review does not show which word gets displayed from which course).

Sometimes I can actually remember, which course asks for what word (exact synonym) even the course owner (or offically Memrise team) has NOT given a (…) hint.
But it really is just a bad bad practice to do so.

The good thing about DuoLingo.com (the portal, not the Memrise-DuoLingo courses) IMHO is:

  • A) more alternatives are accepted by typing (btw I am using the great “all-typing” user script by cooljingle)

  • B) there is a report button on DuoLingo.com with 4-6 options where you request that your own answer is accepted, report an (obvious) error, write and submit a detail description in a text box to the course creation team.

IMHO there should be a Memrise course-creator/contributor “reported words review list”, where the course team can make the course better, correct error, add hints, add synonyms, etc.

And it should be made MUCH EASIER for normal users to report question/word suggestions/errors (the community forum does not do it) in a standard way, not having to open threads or post to community course-error_reporting_threads.

It is IMHO just too complicated and time consuming.
Currently I am collecting some errors/missing hints for all of my learning PT courses in a notepad.
I would have to post my findings to MULTIPLE course threads on the community forums.
Of course, my plan is to do it a bit later…

But that does not help in the process to make the Memrise course report-exchange way more standardized and easier…

My 2cents

Thomas
