And I’m constantly failing simple questions because I’m not a mind reader.
The same thing happens with “friend”, because there is two version of it in the system: 友達 and 友. There might be the same problem with the word “school” to.
@hallgat89 ~ is this the course name in question ?
If it is, it really helps to let others know which course you are referring to (including the owner of the course) by providing a link to it, so that possible action can be taken to address your concerns.

besides the above advice which is entirely correct… this is a know bug, and has been notified before, but so far Memrise has not seen this as a priority for fixing.
Essentially the software assumes that only one word can translate to the one in the other language, so it does not check for cases where there might be several ones (and don’t I wish it was that easy!)

if the software is made this way, then it is not a bug. There are probably 2 separate entries in the database, and the creator forgot to add alternatives… or to give other clues
Uh, that’s still a bug when you’re given two choices with the same entries by the system. Languages are not nor ever have been 1:1 so perhaps the Memrise system should at the minimum not give two choices that are exactly similar.
Now, I do try to check my database and entries in Memrise for close or similar answers and make it obvious which to choose, but Memrise should still not display duplicate answers.
On iOS it often shows duplicate answers. In fact, twice this evening, the situation occurred where all answers were the same. Luckily though, they have written it, so that it accepts any copy of the correct answer. When I answer, all copies turn green and I move to the next exercise. So these exercises are impossible to get wrong, since all options are correct.

Found another (many) cases of similar stuff:
Below there is a question, and I must answer it. (trans: This? )
The answer is either “yes, this” or “no, not this”.
Only the answer no “this is not” is accepted. (ううん、これじゃない。) I think this is not a grammatical thing I can infer from the question, so I have to tip the answer is yes or no. There should be a help stating if the answer starts with yes or no. (also for some reason there ar notations for each questions if it is male or female, but it doesn’t make sense either)
They’re having you type in a specific English translation? That’s bad test design.
Not a translation. An actual answer to the question in Japanese.
Test asks: “This?” (no additional info)
I write: "Yes, this."
Test says: Wrong, the correct answer is “No, not this.”
So I’m expected to memorize the answer and question pairs knowing which question must be answered with “yes, …” and which one with “No, …”. It just simply makes no sense.
How it should be:
Test: "This? (object is not present)"
Me: "No, not this."
Test: correct
I have a similar problem with the same course:
As far as I can see all of those answers would be correct, yet only one is accepted 
Ignore all the n/a words. The course seems abandoned, so there is no other way to make it usable. Somethimes I had to ignore whole sections.
