A few questions from a starter (Spanish 1)

Hi,

I recently started with the Spanish course 1 on Memrise. But I don’t understand a few things so I thought I would ask them here. Hopefully you could answer my questions. I thank you in advance!

First of all, the Spanish course by Memrise is Spanish that is being spoken in Spain, isn’t it?

Secondly, a few more advanced words showed up like: estás, están, estáis, quieren, queréis or something… I honestly don’t understand a shit of it… Could someone please explain this to me in details?

Lastly:
el primo; la prima = the cousin (masc.; fem.)
el cuñado; la cuñada = the brother-in-law; the sister-in-law
el sobrino; la sobrina = the nephew; the niece
el suegro; la suegra = the father-in-law; the mother-in-law

Is this true:
el primo = masculine cousin (a boy)
la prima = feminine cousin ( a girl)

If it is true, then what about el sobrino and la sobrina? Are they just synonyms of el primo and la prima? El sobrino is a masculine cousin, isn’t it? And same goes for la sobrina, that’s a feminine cousin, right?

And what about the “in-law” after father, mother, brother and sister?

Very basic questions but I really don’t understand them. Hopefully you could help me out.

  1. Check in your dashboard which course exactly you are learning. Spanish courses by Memrise are marked as Spanish (Spain) or Spanish (Mexico).

  2. It’s a pretty basic stuff, I’d recommend you to open a grammar book to understand it. Estás, están, estáis, etc is a conjugation of a verb estar in present tense. The same goes for querer.

Are el primo and la prima the same as el sobrino and la sobrina?

And what’s the difference between el suegro and la suegra and el padre and la madre?
El padre and la madre for your real parents?

Primo/prima is a cousin, sobrino/sobrina is a nephew. It’s not the same.

Suegro/suegra is a father/mother-in-law. They are parents of your wife or husband, whereas padre and madre are your actual parents.

Ohh, English is not my native language as you might have noticed… in Dutch they’re both the same. sobrina/sobrino = for the kids of the siblings and primo/prima the kids of your uncle/aunt, right

Maar waarom ben je begonnen met zowel de Spaanse cursus uit het Nederlands als de cursus vanuit het Engels als je nog niet zo goed Engels spreekt?

Ik was donderdag begonnen met de Engelse variant, bij het instellen van de talen op www.memrise.com zag ik geen Nederlands staan… dus dacht ik dat ze geen Nederlandse variant aanbieden

Pas vandaag, toen ik de Engelse variant had afgerond, ben ik erachter komen, haha
