"Whoops. Could not load the session. Sorry.".....AGAIN

Firstly apologies if this is posted in the wrong section, google brought me here. I’m new to memrise and have just spent an hour or so typing in 84 Old English nouns into a course I am trying to create.
https://www.memrise.com/course/1814128/old-english-nouns-84-most-frequent-mascnouns/garden/learn/

But when I try to preview it etc I get the dreaded “Whoops” . I say “dreaded” because, looking through past threads, I see it is an ongoing ‘bug’. I have tried the +url work around and that just brings up a ‘can’t find page’.

Hi there ! I do not what happen to your course but it rather look like a “time out” …
To load more than a few words… and i 'd say 84 is more… I invite you rather to use the massive upload. Basically you type in a spreadsheet like .xls one column your old english , the other the modern one. then a global copy.
So now you go to memrise , create your course (check 1st if this part is not saved already.) then look for button advanced, and select +Bulk word, a window will open and you can paste there ! you validate… and hocus pocus you have your word listed there. You save and that’s it !
Cheers !
ps I think there is a how to do somewhere in the forum. I check that…

Try the browser console F12.
Probably you will find an error message there.

Hi TH, apparently there is an ‘Ajax’ error…as far as I can tell, I wouldn’t claim to understand the console box. Tried the page in firefox as well with the same results. In the UK ‘Ajax’ is bath cleaner- I assume this is a different ‘Ajax’ ?

How about copy & pasting it here?
The developers need more informations than the above.
We can tag it later for some Memrise support people.

Do you use any user scripts?
The last Memrise code update on Wednesday has broken several scripts. You need to update or better deactivate them for the moment.

“How about copy & pasting it here?”-TH

I could but to be perfectly frank, I came to memrise (after a UK Newspaper article) for it’s ease-of-use. Also I have a ‘thing’ about websites that constantly nag me to ‘upgrade to pro’, to give them money, when they can’t get their ‘basic’ site to run without bugs and who require the average user such as myself to have an IT Degree to use.

I shall probably give CM2’s suggestion (thanks CM2 for that btw) a try and if that doesn’t work I shall look for an alternative to memrise that does.

@Jack_Ketch89

I still do not know what “Preview” you are talking about.

Try to add a 2nd definition column.
There is only one column definition in your course!!!
I do not create courses myself, but there must be probably an error how you try to use Memrise as a course owner.

When I hit the “Learn” button myself, I too run into the “Whoops. Could not load the session. Sorry.” error message.

Interestingly, there is no red error message in the browser console.
So it is an internal server error.

IMHO you can not use Memrise the web portal (nor the mobile apps) very well without a ton’s of installed user scripts.

I described it here: Can any teachers with groups help me please? Words learnt/in long term memory are better than points gained?

You do not need necessarily have to have an IT degree, but you need to be willed to jump into the deep water how to install / use them.
Same stuff as on DuoLingo…

For example you have to search the forum what scripts you can find and how to run them with browser addons.

Try AnkiSRS.

But you definitely need to be a person with a (more) deep technical background to understand and use it.

Even me, a Java developer with years of IT experience, has to invest DAYS to read into the Anki manual, Windows application settings and search for interesting forum threads and blogs, how best to use this program.

It will probably take me weeks or months to get any gist how I can import and review my Memrise courses very well by tuning standard settings.

Anki has out-of-the-box support for overdueness - a feature which was killed by Memrise staff a few months ago with a code update making Cooljingle’s great user script unsupportable).

Memrise is A LOT easier than Anki and I have been using Memrise for 1,2 years.

Then you better use Open source tools…like AnkiSRS & Co.

I get not too many Memrise Pro upgrade screens, but YES, they will be shown from time to time when I reach new streaks on courses (even completed ones).
Or I get offers per e-mail as I have not turned it off.

So prepared…but I think you could live with that.

It is not that annoying like how DuoLingo does it in their Android app after each lesson.

Was that announced in the newspaper that Memrise has no bugs as well as?

The last code update was last week Wednesday.

With every code update the past months they either killed old features, updated their API (user scripts not working anymore), introduced new bugs or made the main dashboard (completely) unuseable; it still is a bit.

After the update I can not type anymore in my courses.
And now as this basic functionality was recovered by Cooljingle with his “all typing” script update, the
onscreen keyboard for diacretics is gone (so Memrise made another change)…fantastico!
.
.
You just need to scroll past the news in the announcement sub-forums and “endlss” user feedbacks (bug reports or complains) to get a clue what is going on with the Memrise web portal.

IMHO they seem to not have any testing departement or QS quality management, just like DuoLingo.
You, as the end user, are their BETA tester!
So, if you want to use Memrise, you better be prepared for this stuff!

And without any user script you can NOT even turn OFF this timer on the web site!!!

I “learned” about >~5000 Portuguese “words” (incl. phrases/sentences) on Memrise in 15 months…so if you are patient, and have a low frustration level, you might learn to live with it.

The updates and bugs get more often…
I just can hope that this update stuff ends at some time once the website is useable again.

Depending on the language (e.g Asia) you might miss important features (turn off hint keyboard, show keyboard clearfix, problems with new “Auto accept”, etc.)

My best suggestion: Try it for yourself…be patient…test around.

We will try to help you as best as we can if you run into any questions.

I have created my own courses as well. The only time I came across the dreaded ‘whoops’ message was when I tried to preview/learn a course I was creating but I had only one column of the course fully completed. Once I had at least two columns complete, ie both the question and answer, the ‘whoops’ message disappeared. I looked at your course and it seems only one column of words was completed so far?

@TH @J your replies provided the solution, many thanks. I added a number as a definition for each question, as a ‘placeholder’ and suddenly all was good .

TH, strange you should mention ‘open source’…i had just downloaded Mnemosyne when you and J provided the answer.

wanders off swearing about the wasted Nachmittag (afternoon) and cats (it’s a German thing)

I also found the same bug in another course. Link here: https://www.memrise.com/course/348761/jlpt-n4-vocabulary/21/garden/learn/

Anyway, Level 21 of the *JLPT N4 Vocabulary by JTalkOnline.com supposedly has 17 words to learn but only 16 appear. I found that out by trying to ignore all the words of that Level and then it said that 16 out of 17 words were ignored. I tried to contact the course creator but there was no way to do so.

Again, the problem most likely is the the phantom 17th word.

Have you tried to logout and re-login into your account?

Does the problem persist on the mobile app when you syncronize it?

Probably that mentioned course has a phantom dead word in it’s DB.

Yes, I just tried it and no change. Also, I only use the web version since I do not own a smartphone yet (I know it’s rare). I found the course creator’s FB page and I posted a message there. Hopefully it will be noticed soon.

No smartphone? No problem.

Just install an Android emulator like KOPlayer, Bluestacks, NOX, etc.

There are 2-3 threads about it on the DuoLingo discussion forum - I wrote one and selected several resources for the other “Emulator for Linux” threads…but I need to try to refind them.
