Hey, I know there has been a lot of discussion and some calls recently about the Memrise beta and changes that are set for 01/01/2022 (e.g. mems disappearing). Can anyone point me to or provide a summary of what has been discussed and more importantly what has been agreed. I, and I’m sure most other people, don’t want to have to trawl through hundreds of forum posts to work it out. In particular I am interested to know:
a). will community courses still be present for the duration of next year
b). will there be a typing only option for classic review
c). will mems be gone on 01/01/2021
Ideally a member of staff at memrise would answer this. Thanks.
When it comes to grammar, pronunciation, listening etc. I don’t see that Memrise is in any way effective. The one thing it used to do well was learning vocabulary.
I would not bother trying to learn a significant amount of vocabulary (eg over 1000 words) without the use of mnemonics and typing-only tests. It is simply unrealistic.

I never used mems. why?
after 3 month my brain is saving 90 to 95 words of 100 without any additional learning process
the key to get it permanently into memory is repetition
just repeat. this is key of success

Mems serve more than one purpose. On community courses, I use them to alert other users to something that is incorrect so they can ignore it. I also use them for pointing out multiple translations of the same word, and add sentences to put the word in context so that people learn to use vocabulary correctly. In several courses, I add quick grammar tips to explain why a phrase is the way it is and help people correctly build their own sentences.
While I absolutely agree with the importance of mems, I still find Memrise effective for learning vocabulary without mems. Without them, it’s less effective, but still effective.
That’s just not true. It might be true for someone talented in learning languages, but for someone average-maybe below average like me, i have a very hard wall somewhere between 60-80 new words, depending on what the words actually are, and it won’t matter how much effort, time, or repetitions, the words just flat out won’t sink in at a certain point.
For example, 15 words is not that hard. I’ll still forget and have to put effort, but it’s not hard. 30 words is going to require repetition, as in I will have to restart the level a 1-2 times in that day for those 30 words to sink in. At 45, it’s worse. I’m going to end up restarting those levels maybe 3-5 times in a single day. At 60, i’ll have to restart all levels about 10 times. Beyond 60, it’s unclear and there isn’t enough hours in the day with the sheer number of times i’m restarting levels, and it doesn’t matter anyway, it doesn’t sink in regardless and I end up remembering only maybe 30 words. So not only am I putting in significantly more effort to learn more, I end up remembering less when I try to go beyond what i’m capable of.
Not really, if you didn’t use mems it won’t make any difference for you at all.
But, I would like to know if it’s just me, or Memrise hasn’t actually changed anything? I’m still seeing the old platform interface and the mems are still around, I thought the changes could take a while to appear because of different timezones, but three days have passed and nothing seems to have changed at all. Memrise decided to not apply the changes by now?
I agree entirely about the use of memes. Each language and learner is different, but if you’re learning something like Mandarin, then the memes are better than simply memorizing everything because they break down each character so that you can “see” the meaning. It’s silly to make everyone learn in the same way.
Will we be able to have typing-only courses on Memrise?
It’d be nice to have that kind of choice… Just saying. Because , it helps many people.
Unfortunately, I don’t remember the material learned very well when there’s only a scarce amount of typing…
