I’m reviewing the iOS Pro version for a week. So far I don’t think the cost is justified due to the limited feature additions in iOS app (not even speed learning.) If someone at Memrise does not change my mind I will cancel my Pro subscription next week.
Difficult words, without question. I use it all the time. The rest? Meh. But I’m still paying…
I used to be pro, as I wanted to support Memrise - but you really don’t get enough to justify the pro membership vs free. Basically, the stats they offer are of no interest. I’m not bothered about how many days I have been learning in a row, or what time of day I learn. The stats that would be of interest are the number of times I have got a word right in a row (i.e. a learning streak for each word),how long to go before I am due to learn that word next and when how long it has been since I started learning that word. In this way, I would tag words as learnt if I’d got them right say 20 times in a row or I got it right after a years gap. I find the sheer number of words for my different courses means I am spending time answering learnt words. The annoying thing is the learning streak per word is available, but only comes up at the end of a session on the website version and not the app - but you can’t then re-access it. I would happily pay for premium if these stats were available on the app version.
Good points, statistics should be for understanding learning issues. I’m not that interested to know what time of the day I get most errors, it should be obvious that it’s 3am.
What I would like to see for Pro members:
- The ability to turn off “Speed Test”, so it won’t suggest it as my next action.
- The ability to ignore words in a course, by marking it.
statistics and difficult words. i am web user.
The free App is already very good and can be used on its own - otherwise Memrise wouldn’t grow.
It’s better to have 1% of 1,000,000 paying users than 10% of 50,000. So that you are wondering whether you need really Pro, is not so strange.
For me:
- downloading the courses
- difficult words
- listening skills testing (where available)
makes it worth the while. It simply saves time: can use it in transit when internet is not available and ‘difficult words’ helps me getting words down that otherwise would cost ages. People work for hours for a wage; why not spend money to save time?
If you use the Memrise courses, meet the natives is nice, but the pronunciation is exactly the same as for the course itself, so for me, that’s not a that big of a win.
@nathanhorn: just try Memrise of 3 months. If you are not satisfied, you’ll ask your money back in the first 30 days. You can’t get broke, and you know if the extra features work for you.
I wish it were, I cannot download the course I want…
Offline lessons. Absolute deal breaker for me as I spend over an hour on the London Underground every day I have to go to the office. Since the Tube doesn’t have mobile service on board, unlike just about any other metro network, that’s ideal time to study (with no phone signal what else can I do?) as long as you can download the courses to your device. And with the pro app you can! But if that’s not a crucial thing for your commutes then maybe don’t bother.
