Thank you. That’s what we were hoping.
It looks like all the course forums have disappeared too. I tried to find forums from some of the JLPTN2 courses and couldn’t find them.
Mine are still there. Have you seen them before?
Same ol’ story as ever. They make 1 change and we get 10 bugs. They don’t seem to test properly before a release.
They release a beta and before us beta testers have a chance to hammer it, it’s released to the public.
Memrise is a very strange company indeed.
I noticed a couple of weeks ago that user profiles are also missing. I had an email address in mine so that people could notify me of errors in one of my courses. I just noticed this morning that the course descriptions were missing.
They removed our user profiles from the learning site a while ago. It was explained here, in case you missed it:
Maybe when we get our course descriptions back, you could add something to yours to let people know where to post error notifications. I included the url of my course forum in mine.
the situation has been like this for at least 7 hours now. No chance to really navigate memrise today…
edit: I am not able to see the header of a course (so the clickable main title) not even in edit more
edit2: and if they intend to take out - for the sake of poor FB/liberal/post-gender and post what ever/young souls in here - the course desriptions for good, than the courses fora are dead as well
I expect anything like this incoming:
Lately, we had a lot of course description with to much relevant information or even content that could be unsettling to some users. We are happy to announce that course descriptions will be replaced by a funny Ziggy-cartoon. Thanks to this change, the learners will be even more motivated to start a course they don’t know anything about. We are glad you are liking our changes and will keep you updated. Sincerely, your memrise staff.
Since this has also affected official Memrise courses I strongly suspect it’s a bug.
And I’m not missing any course forums.
You’ve got their writing style almost perfect. You just need to add “Happy learning!” at the end.
@duaal, Yes, diego.lopez from the Memrise team has pretty much confirmed it’s a bug in his post above. Let’s hope for a fix tomorrow.
As an extra step (to avoid further abuse of the Bio field) we are
placing it under temporary suspension as of today. This will allow us to
think through how this social feature has worked for our users and make
a plan to change and/or improve it.
Remember when they removed the ability to search for images for mems “temporarily”? How many years ago was that? More than 2 I’m pretty sure, though the exact date is documented on the old forums, which they conveniently wiped out so we can never see them again. Unless that thread happens to be one of the few we preserved on archive.org.
I decided to dig it up out of curiosity.
Here’s the main topic, dated over two and a half years ago…
http://web.archive.org/web/20160508163713/http://www.memrise.com/thread/1356061/
It seems the comment from the staff was on the feedback forums, which sadly didn’t get backed up (due to getting zero warning on the shutdown), but I have a backup of another user quoting them in this post:
So yeah, my hopes are slim on getting those profile descriptions back… Fingers still crossed on this new one getting fixed though…
I’ve also discovered - as I have several tabs open with more than one course open at a time - that a little detective work is needed to work out which course (home page) one is on.
One has to look at the level titles or the address bar! (Or go to a level!)
I’m sceptical… like this, no bothersome user created courses, no bothersome webversion, no costly space on discourse servers, simply all quiet and cheaper… and as asocial as an app can be…
This issue has been resolved, thanks for reporting it and sorry for the trouble.
Cheers,
Diego.
Yes, I’m a software developer at Memrise.
Thanks - I’ll try to remember to tag you on future issues I detect.
