I have been studying Japanese on memrise for years.
Until recently, I never had the helpful multiple choice kanji buttons underneath the answer input; I have always typed them in myself. I can easily recognize kanji. What I need to practice is the pronunciation and spelling. Having the kanji underneath gives away the answer, which undermines the whole study session.
Is there any way to turn it off? I’m frustrated enough to quit the site altogether, especially with some of the other “helpful” changes implemented recently.
I don’t think there’s any other solution, besides just trying your best not to look at the hints, at the moment. When I use the app, it is a bit easier to ignore it, because my phone’s keyboard will cover the hints.
I really hope they’ll remove it or at least give people the choice to toggle it on or off.
(in short from to all these above, two users came up with this one possible solution, which I am using myself: "You can disable the keyboard by using uBlock (or AdBlock Plus I believe.)
In uBlock:
Open uBlock Dashboard
Click on My Filters tab
Add entry: www.memrise.com##.clearfix.keyboard
Click Apply changes.
)
for courses you created yourself, one user discovered another solution: add a symbol, sign, whatever in the “keyboards” setting, and the hints are gone
the bad side of both solutions: strict-typing courses become impossible to take
Thanks!! Glad to know I’m not the only one struggling. I might just stick to my phone for a while… I’m just picky about my studying, since it takes up so much of my time
Hi guys I have the same problem, is there an update to this convo? basically I am trying to type in kana but I keep getting kanji suggestions which is very annoying - any updates? TIA
i took out the fonts from the css (just delete the fonts line), as I have my own userstyle for that. My ublock line stil functions, and I prefer that line to yet another userstyle…
The stylesheet. Basically, the piece of code that makes the site look how it looks.
If you wish to view a site’s stylesheet, the easiest thing to do is simply right-click and go ‘view-source’. You said you’re not very technical, so what you’ll be presented with is an incomprehensible jumble – but if you ctrl+f (search function) and look for ‘.css’, you should be able to pick out any links to the site’s stylesheets (which I’m afraid to say, you probably won’t understand anyway if you don’t know css. Best just to go with a premade style, like on stylish or something).
You’re trying to get rid of an onscreen keyboard? (Sorry to say I’m unfamiliar with phone-related issues, as use desktop exclusively.) Is there truly no way to just turn it off in settings? Or do you mean the automatic letters that come up underneath in review sessions (which happens even on desktop)? Because I use an all-type script and don’t get those most the time, anyway.
Thank you so much for your time Isharr. I did what you said and indeed pulled up the .css and it Brought up 6 results but then didnt know what to do
What im basically trying to do is stop the app from bringing up the kanji version of words, ie when I do for instance the classic review exercise and I type words in if there is a kanji for it it will immediately appear where I am writing, which I dont want. If I want to change it back to kana I have to manually select it from a drop down menu … very time consuming …
