Hi!
I’ve been enjoying Memrise for a few months now but there are things I would love to be improved/introduced.
I would really like to have opportunity to test learned words in a more challenging way - something like flash cards or fill in a gap or even simple entering the whole word, but without any cues like now.
I have a feeling that all the exercises are more like a game, but I don’t really memorise the words, because I’m not forced to remember them - there are always hints and cues that make the whole thing too easy!
Is there any chance that you will introduce a simple feature - I see the word in English and have to type down the translation in the language that I’m learning? (without predefined letters on the keyboard as it is now)
Thanks in advance!
Hi and welcome to the forum!
If you are using the web verrsion of Memrise, there is a userscript that you can add which lets you choose to set a course so that you will only get typing tests (no multiple choice or tapping tests). See this earlier forum thread:
Sadly, there’s currently nothing similar for the app versions.
Hopefully with reviews you will be tested in different ways.
And you can always re-start a level.
The web version of courses is much more challenging (which can really test if you know the answer) as the App gives you all the characters (and a few others) to tap, whereas with the web you have to use the keyboard.
I totally agree with Aleksandra, it would ne nice to ask the phrases without any cue on the app version.
But typing on a cell phone is just time wasting especially for sentences, and frequently you can have a typo that’s not representative of your knowledge of the words but just your finger ability.
So the best would be to say the word orally, then the app gives the answer, then you auto evaluate yourself. In the evaluation you could have 3 options : “wrong”, “correct but with difficulties” or “perfect”.
Mosalingua uses this principle and it’s by far the best solution I know. It allows you to go very fast through words you already know and focus on what challenges you. Plus you don’t feel like a child in front of a teacher but like a responsible person!
PS: I still use memrise in addition to mosalingua mostly because of the video samples of different people speaking : this is really a good idea that makes learning super lively and friendly!
