Speed review: adapting timer to phrase length

Hello,

I would like to suggest a modification to the way the speed review sets the timer for each phrase.
At the moment you get the exact same amount of time to answer whether you need to guess a single word or an entire phrase of 10-15 words. The latter obviously takes more time to read and thus doesn’t help memorizing the whole expression since you end up clicking on the right answer only based on 1-2 words that you manage to catch.

So what I suggest is adapting the timer to the phrase length. That would give learners time to read the full sentence and memorize it better. For example, you could give a base timer of 5 seconds and then add 0.25 seconds for each word displayed on the screen.
Why 0.25s? The average reading speed is 200-250 words per minute, so it means roughly 0.24-0.3s to read a single word (of course it will depend on word length).

So, what are your thoughts about it?

Best,
Sergio

See this thread:

I haven’t used SR on the web in a while, and I have never used the iOS app, so things might be different there. Not sure what platform you refer to.

Thank you Olaf for your reply.

That could do the trick, even if it could be optimized further.
I was referring to the web browser version, hopefully we will see something similar there too.

Best,
Sergio
