Is there a way to include/increase the amount of words & phrases that require the answers to be typed out?
The App and website UI currently have some “limit” - maybe character counts - where less than this “limit”, one has to type/spell out the answer while learning it and in review. Above this character or word limit, everything exercise is drag and drop.
In the settings there is the ability to turn on/off “pecking” quizes, but no ability to increase what answers must be typed out. For every word/phrase there are about 7 or 8 exercises before getting “full flower”, with single or short words, at least one time it requires it to be spelled out. With phrases it is 100% drag n drop ordering or “flipping a flash card” but never having to type it out.
For me in learning, speed is less important than interaction, and to be honest my finger tips actually get sore from all the “pecking” at the screen one has to do with Memrise.
I am learning German fyi, using serveral courses simultaneously.
If you are successful: there are a lot of other useful userscripts out there, lost of them by cooljingle. I’m using four or five at the moment. If you are into typing long sentences you might want to look into the script that stops the timer (Memrise Timer Disabler).
Thanks, I got this working! Much better, though it takes longer. But as I use both the iOS App on my iPad and on my Macbook the web UI, I can get two different learning/reviewing experiences dependent upon what I need. If I dont want this, I can always switch to Safari on the Macbook versus Firefox.
I did notice, the timer stops with only the first script during Speed review for any answers requiring typing, but not so in normal practice… which is fine. I am not in a race against the clock to gain points, although the timer in speed review does “encourage” one to seek out single words in phrases to answer them instead of the entire phrase itself.
When you are finished with typing your answer the website will immediately skip to the next question. You won’t have to hit the “enter” key first.
BUT it also can be used for - in lieu of a better word - cheating. As it only skips to the next word when your answer is correct you can fiddle around with your answer until you get it right. On the other hand it helps when you just made a stupid slip of the pen and therefore won’t get penalized with more reviews than necessary.
Whether the Timer Disabler is included I can’t say, because I use both.
Copy that and thanks! And thanks again for hooking me up with the original script!
If I want to go a bit faster, I’ll just hop on my iPad. I’m not doing this to “win” a game, but rather actually learn a language.
A bit early to tell, but doing a section or two all by typing/spelling the answer seems to help with retention - especially longer answers (sentences).
Cooljingle’s Auto Correct script helps me very much with the “all-typing” combination and 50languages or offical Memrise PT1-5 courses as these courses have quite longer sentences (mixed single words + phrases/sentences).
I do not have to waste my time in using the mouse to play with the special characters keyboard, but still I do see them in my own answer (Memrise is configured for non-strict typing) right BEFORE I hit enter.
Your better word for it would be a super useful learning aid.
That feature exists on the app and it’s fantastic. This little thing makes a world of difference.
I installed both the “all typing” and “timer disabler” and I’m loving them!
BUT, I have a problem. Now, when learning new words I get too many questions per learning session, that I need to type every new word or sentence more than 10 times without making any mistake.
Is there a way or a script to adjust the number of occurrences of every new word?
I have “all typing” turned off for “learning mode”.
I get max 1-2/6 flower steps to type the word/phrase/sentence.
Sometimes it is step 5 or 6, sometimes it is step 3 or 4.
But it is quite good mixed.
I only try to learn new words, which I do not really know or which are easier.
For more difficult words I try to re-learn words (mixed vocabulary between PT Basic, DuoLingo PT, PT1-7 courses) with the 6 steps to hammer it into my head.
For the “rest of well-known single words” I either use Cooljingle’s “Auto learn” script which directly jumps after one correct answer to flower step 6, or simply ignore the word (I rarely use that Memrise option).
The last setting “replace audio multiple choice” unfortunately often resets for me and also does not seem to work that quite good.
I still often get audio excercises and these contain quite often errors, like I can not choose the the correct 1-3 for the correct solution.
Luckily when those Memrise audio errors popup (it may be a definition error for the word by the course owner??) I can still deactivate audio question for 20/30min as per the Memrise question dialog.
