I went back to trying to add items to one of my courses today, for the first time since a little while before the mem removal issues, and I’ve run into a new problem that’s preventing me from continuing:
Mems do not seem to be getting imported from the wiki at all. I’ve tested this by trying to import several entries that I’d already put into another course in the past. I’ve confirmed that mems made years before I built the old course are still there on the old course, but they never show up on the new course.
My routine has always been to do a search for each word on a ‘testing’ database, compile every matching entry I can find into a new level, then pick out which one I want to add to the main database, based on the mems that they have. No matter which one I pick now though, the mems are empty, even for ones that I’ve confirmed should have mems.
A good example of this is the word “そしな”, which is in the second level of my course, Yotsubato Vocabulary. The second mem for that item, made by ebat79, was made before I had created that course, and was there when I first imported that item. There are only two results for that word in a search through the wiki (you need to search for the kanji form, “粗品”, since the kana search doesn’t work well), and neither of them have any mems when I try to import them. I’m using the “Japanese” wiki, and I’ve been playing with it quite a bit since I first noticed this, trying out everything I can think of, but I have yet to see a single mem on a newly created item.
I’d really appreciate any help on this, as importing mems is a high priority for me in creating my courses, and I’m back to being stuck and unable to build them again at the moment because of this issue.
It’s been two and a half weeks now, and I’m still having the same issue. I’ve tested this with several items now, as I find words that I had put into my own courses that have older mems, and I still have yet to see a single mem on a newly created item.
Could a staff member please reply to at least let me know if this is a bug or a deliberate change? From what I can tell, it wasn’t like this until the changes to the mems around the end of last month, and I’d like to at least know if I should be continuing to wait for a fix or if I should just bite the bullet on using bulk add and forget about importing mems.
I certainly think that’s a big, big shame. That’s a huge amount of memory aids that learners of new courses will be missing out on now. I study from courses that I make myself almost exclusively these days, so I guess I’ll be seeing that ‘no mems’ screen for everything from here on…
Well, I guess it speeds up the course creation process for me considerably, at least, because now I have no reason not to use bulk add. (Have to look on the bright side now and then, right?)
In any case, thank you for the response. I’m honestly really not happy about this change, but it’s nice to know which direction I should be going in, at least, so I appreciate it.
does this “feature we no longer support” affect also courses created one year ago? I wanted to change the mem I was seeing for the 交响乐/symphony, but there are 0 mems there now-----
I find this a pity, feels like the mems thing was not “rolled back” and how can one, in fact, see mems created by other users??? the official courses have almost 0 mems, and in the others one has no idea… Memrise claimed to have rolled back the unfortunate decision of the last month, but in fact it did hide away the mems, and did the “hiding” through the back door - you did not mention you don’t support a central database/wiki anymore and what consequences this has over mems/audio/autosearch/etc…
Sorry to bring up an old post but will this be fixed in the future?
If not is there a way to make your own vocabulary list but use community mems? I just want a list of words to review and it seems making a course is the only way to do that but there’s no mems loaded in for any of the words. There was some post about how you are having the community mems put back but I think that was already done but I guess you just can’t do anything new now? Is there any alternatives to getting community mems somehow into the course or can you just not create a new course without community mems anymore at all? That seems like kind of a big issue. If there are not “automatically imported” is there a way to manually look through them at least? Like look up a word and see what the mems for it are?
It would be really nice if this feature was put back. Not sure why such a great feature would be removed.
