Hi there, so I installed memrise onto my iphone 5s a couple of days ago to give it a shot. I’ve literally only started learning Japanese a couple of weeks ago, and only intend to learn casually via apps (currently using Drops and Lingodeer mostly).
I thought I’d give Memrise a try, started the first lesson which taught me about 12 hiragana (which I already know, but went through the lesson anyway in the hopes of progressing), but even after completing that first bit EVERYTHING is locked. I can do one lesson with that grammar bot, and one lesson with that chat introduction bot thing, but if I click on ANYTHING else in the entire app, I’m just hit with a pop up for the pro function. I can’t seem to work out a way to unlock anything so is it just that Memrise isn’t free any more? If so it seems silly that they only allow a user to use maybe 5mins of content for free before expecting them to pay a big chunk of cash, especially when there’s free apps like lingodeer that provide so much.
Also I thought there were meant to be user made courses, but I’m not sure how to access them. Every single thing I’ve clicked on brings me back to the pro page, and if I click on the courses section, then on Japanese, the only options I’m given are the 3 Memrise courses and nothing else…
Anyone able to explain to me where I’m meant to go in this app, or should I just delete now as I don’t have the cash to pay for a pro account-- one of the sole reasons for learning a language is to keep myself occupied during unemployment without spending out money.
I don’t realy know how you got this problem, maybe it’s phone specific.
Try to join a course you like on the Browser (PC) version of memrise. Reopen the App, and go into that course on your mobile version. That should get rid of the problem.
If it dosen’t work, try to contact an admin, or go to bug control forum and not a language forum.
So I’m guessing everything shouldn’t be locked? I just checked on my browser and it looks like everything is unlocked, I even completed the 3 Launchpad section on my browser just now. Uninstalled and the reinstalled my app and it’s still showing everything but level 1 as locked. If I click on the launch pad, which is greyed out and showing a padlock, it shows I’ve done the 9/9 words, but won’t let me look at or access it, and everything else is still locked off too.
Not sure what can really be done about it if a reinstall hasn’t made a difference Seems like a really dumb bug, if that’s what it is, because I imagine it’ll discourage most people who try and get this.
You aren’t the only one to report this issue, many people have, and Memrise still remains silent, for more than six months since the first reports appeared. I don’t think it’s a bug, but rather a deliberate act of possibly false advertising on Memrise’s part.

Also Memrise removed user-created courses from the in-app search results. You can still take user courses on the app, but you have to find them and start learning them on the web site first.
Seems like a really dumb bug, if that’s what it is, because I imagine it’ll discourage most people who try and get this.
